what motivations do Jehovas Wittnesses have?

i have this question running thru my head for a while now. If Jehova's Wittnesses don't belief in heaven or hell, and no afterlife, what motivation do they have to lead good, moral lives?

maybe i have just understood this concept wrongly but from what i gather, after death you simply cease to exist.

am i missing the point and is there more to this than i have found on the internet?

i mean, for other christians the motivation to live a good and moral life is the reward of heaven at the end of it, or hell as punishment if you have been a very nasty person throughout your life.

can someone clarify this for me or correct me if i have misunderstood the whole thing?

Update:

i have read about the paradise for jehovas wittnesses, but doesn't that only "start" after Armaggedon? what happens to the soul of jehovas wittnesses who happen to die before this judgement day?

is this also a mis-information?

i am not picking on anyone, i am truly interested in this, so please don't feel offended.

Update 2:

Matt - LOL, no i don't want to do good because i don't want to roast in hell. i try to live a good life because i care about my family, friend and others and hate the thought of doing anything that might hurt someone else even if i might gain something from it. no need to be frightend.

Update 3:

ITGuy - i really like your explaination. so i have in fact been misinformed about this aspect of your belief.

but if there is only a certain amount of righteous witnesses allowed into the paradise, what happens to all the others?

you probably think i'm thick but it is something that is nagging at me. for example, if i converted but the rest of my family didn't, there would be absolutely no chance of meeting them again after death?

(i believe in an afterlife and one fear i have is that i might not find my loved ones after we die)

is there a good website where i could read and find out more about all this?

Update 4:

would any Jehova's Wittness on here be wiling to allow me to e-mail them to help me learn more without having to type questions on Y/A? i have a lot of questions, and even though a father and his daughter visit me every couple of weeks, i have too many questions to discuss in the hour they are here.

my email is on my profile page.

our primary motivation is, as Vot has stated, love for God. Also love for our neighbor.

We DO believe in Heaven. We just don't believe that ALL righteous people go to Heaven. We believe that 144,000 Christians in total have been/would be chosen by God to reign in Heaven with Christ. (Revelation 14:1) We also believe that righteous people would also inherit everlasting life on a paradise Earth free of all the ills we now experience. (Psalm 37:29; Luke 23:43)

While the dead cease to exist at death (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10), the Bible promises a future resurrection of the dead. (John 5:28; Acts 24:15). So we don't see death as a hopeless irreversible end of existence. (1Thessalonians 4:13)

Until the resurrection to life in Paradise, howerver long it happens after death. the soul - the person (Genesis 2:7) - remains unconcious. They experience no pain, no suffering, no conciousness of the passage of time.

Imagine what it was like before you were concieved - death is like that.

The Bible does not state that there is a set number of people who will inherit everlasting life on a Paradise Earth, it only gives a set number who will receive the reward of Heavenly life.

Many people who were not Jehovah's Witnesses WILL be resurrected to life on Earth. (Acts 24:15)

Here's some helpful info. on the resurrection:

Jehovah's do believe in heaven. only that a small number, 144,000 are going to heaven. For those who died before Armageddon, righteous ones have the hope of resurrection to this paradise earth. They serve jehovah God out of love and they believe in the promise of living forever on a paradise earth. That is thier motivation.

Yes you have a chance to see your family in the paradise. If your family was not faithful, they would go through the second judgement during Jesus' 1,000 year reign. If they still did not do what is pleasing to God, then they would lose the priviledge of living forever. a good website is www.watchtower.org. it explains the beliefs of the witnesses. other information on the internet is most likely inaccurate. There are many false witnesses out there spreading lies. Hope this helps!

Most modern day Religions were founded in the 1800's so what the lady said has no accountability. A Witness will be expelled if he does not comply with God's Word, once again the lady does not know what she is talking about, these are the reasons a person would be disfellowshipped: Some of the offenses that could merit disfellowshipping from the Christian congregation are fornication, adultery, homosexuality, greed, extortion, thievery, lying, drunkenness, reviling, spiritism, murder, idolatry, apostasy, and the causing of divisions in the congregation. Unlike most other religions, we do keep our Congregations clean. Now the answer to your ??? Jehovah’s Witnesses Definition: The worldwide Christian society of people who actively bear witness regarding Jehovah God and his purposes affecting mankind. They base their beliefs solely on the Bible. How is the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses financed? By voluntary contributions, as was true with the early Christians. (2 Cor. 8:12; 9:7) No collections are ever taken at their meetings; they do not beg for money from the public. Any donations from interested persons are used to further the worldwide work of Bible education conducted by the Witnesses. Witnesses are not paid to go from house to house or to offer Bible literature on the streets. Love for God and for neighbor motivates them to talk about God’s loving provisions for mankind. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, a legal religious corporation that is used by Jehovah’s Witnesses, was incorporated in 1884 in accordance with the Nonprofit Corporation Law of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Thus, by law it cannot be, and it is not, a profit-making enterprise, nor do individuals make a profit through this Society. The Society’s charter states: “It [the Society] does not contemplate pecuniary gain or profit, incidentally or otherwise, to its members, directors or officers.” Are Jehovah’s Witnesses a sect or a cult? Some define sect to mean a group that has broken away from an established religion. Others apply the term to a group that follows a particular human leader or teacher. The term is usually used in a derogatory way. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not an offshoot of some church but include persons from all walks of life and from many religious backgrounds. They do not look to any human, but rather to Jesus Christ, as their leader. A cult is a religion that is said to be unorthodox or that emphasizes devotion according to prescribed ritual. Many cults follow a living human leader, and often their adherents live in groups apart from the rest of society. The standard for what is orthodox, however, should be God’s Word, and Jehovah’s Witnesses strictly adhere to the Bible. Their worship is a way of life, not a ritual devotion. They neither follow a human nor isolate themselves from the rest of society. They live and work in the midst of other people.

“ . . . that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.”—ACTS 24:15., its not our job to judge who will make it through Armageddon, though. Believe me, I have that same fear that my family (who does not believe in the truth) will be left behind, but I keep praying and hoping that Jehovah sees that their hearts are in the right condition in the end, or that they may even believe the truth before they die.

If you're interested, please feel free to go to the JW's main website, www.watchtower.org - and if you feel comfortable, you can even leave your name and address so that some members of the congregation in your area can stop by and answer any questions that you may have.

Jehovah's Witnesses serve Jehovah God because of their love for Him. (Matthew 26:36-40)

You are correct in that the Bible teaches that after death you simply cease to exist. (Eccl. 9:5, 6, 10. Psalms 146:4)

For further information & learn more or for a free Bible study, you may wish to get in touch with Jehovah's Witnesses at the local Kingdom Hall. Or through their official web site - <watchtower.org>

16 Jesus promised that in the coming new world, those approved by God would receive the gift of “everlasting life.” (Mark 10:30) Please open your Bible to John 3:16 and 17:3, and read what Jesus said we must do to receive everlasting life. Now consider from the Bible the blessings that will be enjoyed by those who qualify for that wonderful gift from God in the coming earthly Paradise.

A person need not go to heaven to have a truly happy future.

Psalms 37:11: “The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.” Revelation 21:1-4: “I saw a new heaven and a new earth . . . I heard a loud voice from the throne say: ‘Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.’”

Micah 4:3, 4: “They will not lift up sword, nation against nation, neither will they learn war anymore. And they will actually sit, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, and there will be no one making them tremble; for the very mouth of Jehovah of armies has spoken it.”

Armageddon in the Bible associates the name, not with a nuclear holocaust, but with the coming universal “war of the great day of God the Almighty.” (Revelation 16:14, 16) This name is applied specifically to “the place [Greek, to′pon; that is, condition or situation]” to which earth’s political rulers are being gathered in opposition to Jehovah and his Kingdom by Jesus Christ. Such opposition will be shown by global action against Jehovah’s servants on earth, the visible representatives of God’s Kingdom.

Jehovahs Witnesses do believe in heaven and hell. Just not in the concept you state.

Heaven : is where Jehovah resides with the spirit creatures and Jesus.

Hell : The grave of mankind. (Sheol) where the dead await the resurrection Jesus taught about. Job asked to be remembered too.

Earth : the place the 'meek will inherit'. .as the paradise Jesus taught .

Must there be a reward for doing the right thing?

For example, do we wish to please our parents simply because we may get something out of it?

We owe God everything. We cannot possibly pay Him back for all that He has done for us. The least that we can do is to try and follow His requirements for us.

"The conclusion of the matter, everything having been heard, is: Fear the [true] God and keep his commandments. For this is the whole [obligation] of man." (Eccl. 12:13)

But Jehovah God loves us so much that He has provided us a future promise of restoring a physical paradise on Earth. Learn more:

our motivation is love for Jehovah God, our Father and Creator

    1 John 5:3 Proverbs 27:11

We also have the motivation to gain what Adam and Eve

    lost for us.

If Adam and Eve had not sinned, they would not

have died. Nothing would have changed for them.

They'd still be living right here on earth.

That's my motivation. I want what my first

parents should have provided for me.

But that's OK, because Jesus stepped in and

bought back that opportunity for me and anyone

else who puts their faith in his sacrifice

Its called social conditioning. If you are not "good" according to the law, for instance, you are jailed so they cannot simply do whatever they want. We are raised to believe that certain things are just bad even though they may be accepted in another part of the world
