what does the expression "air of irony" mean?

not sure if it means anything, or if people like to use it to be pretentious.

Your second guess is pretty much spot-on. To say that something has "an air of _____(something)" is just a fancy way to make a noun into an adjective: IE: "air of irony" = "ironic", "air of misfortune" = unfortunate.

This "air of ___" expression comes from the French language, where it's used commonly, usually to sound more poetic. IE: "Vous avez l'air d'un ange" = "You are like an angel. / You are angelic."
