Introduction:

    This essay was inspired by the consistent assumption of Christians that if I believed the Bible were true, I would become a Christian.  There are several reasons for my atheism, the leading of which is the idea of a higher power is not probable in light of current scientific data.  The second of which is I do not find the state of the world in accordance with an idea of a loving and merciful higher power.  Then of course there is the factor that the basis of this essay shall be about; I do not find the Biblical God fit for worship.  Over the course of this essay there will be some times when I will speak as if I believe in the Bible, when in fact I do not.

    I plan to examine the Bible with critical inquiry.  This essay will not be based upon scientific facts and how they disprove the Bible.  It shall be an application of my emotions regarding compassion, love, mercy, patience, and justice.  I hope to explain more clearly why the God depicted in the Bible violates my idea of a moral being. This shall be done over a series of topics.  Each pointing out how Jehovah is undeserving of my worship. I will utilize Biblical verses to support my claim as well as what I consider to be logical reasoning.

    Now would be the time to ask you to please take out your bibles for consultation.  (I personally prefer the NIV or KJV)  I will only cite the verse and a brief over view.  I do not have the space to write out the verse in its entirety. I especially don’t wish to spew out so much information that I run the risk of overloading those people who dislike reading.  (Funny confliction here, isn’t it?  We are online, in a purely textual world, and people still have the audacity to complain about reading.)  In the case that you dislike reading online essays, I recommend you print this out and thumb through it at your convenience.

Hell:

    Hell, of course, is the mother of all of my problems with the bible.  It is perhaps the most despicable and hideous of all of the Christian God’s crimes.  Indeed, the cruelest of all concentration camps.  (Certainly far worse than the ones created by the Nazis.)  Described biblically as the “lake of fire”, “the place of eternal torment with weeping and gnashing of teeth” Jesus said in Mark 9:42-48 That it is better to commit suicide or self maiming then to be delivered unto hell. So, according to the bible I assume that all here can agree that there is an existence of hell, and that hell is the worst of all circumstance. Knowing this, let me indulge you as to why the existence of hell paints the Christian God as not fit for worshiping.

    I am a moderately compassionate individual, rational, moral, and nurturing.  Most of all I am a creator, a mother.  I propose this to you, a human question.  Can all here, Christian or atheist, safely say that if there is a God, he is our greatest thought magnified?  Whatever emotion we feel as human, being created in his image, God is infinitely more feeling?  For he is the creator of all things created, I believe this concept is pretty safe to assume.  With this being so, my love for my daughter must be a fraction of God’s love for his children.  Speaking as a mother, I can safely say that if my child were to commit the greatest harm upon me tomorrow, I would never wish her harm.  Why?  Simply because she is my creation.

    If my daughter were to maim me, slander me, etc.  I would still love her, for my instinct and emotion demands of me to protect and care for her regardless of her actions, much like all rational beings (animal kingdom included). So now I pose the question, why then would God condemn us to hell for something as menial as lack of faith?  If he is not infinitely more so loving then me, why would hell even exist?  Any true loving being would never condemn his own children to everlasting torment, especially one that proclaims himself to having the very essence of forgiveness.

But “God Is Just” You Claim:

    Most Christians have responded to this statement with the following rationalization.  “God can not let all of his creations into heaven because he is just.”  I ask in rebuttal to this, since when is justice more important than love in the heart of a parent?  Is hell even justice, or is it simply cruel and unusual punishment?  The bible states the system of justice very simply.  “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  There is also another variation of that system with the biblical verse “eye for an eye”.  The Christian God violates his own system of law when he damns his creations to eternal suffering for sins as menial as theft or blasphemy.  I hardly think, nor would any logical person, that throwing someone into a gnashing jaw would be justly befitting of nearly any crime.  (With the exception of murder, and even so, eternal punishment is pretty excessive.)

Thank god someone has managed to maintain some critical thinking, I think your essay is very astute and I share your thoughts entirely. I am just disappointed that so few people, especially some that have responded so far haven't managed to follow your train of thought. It would have been worthwhile for them.

I am a great believer in compassion.But I find it disturbing when peoples brains go into hibernation mode when they hear ideas that are in conflict with their own (as is evident from some of the responses to your question so far). When Christians become indignant with their views I try to remain respectful and attentive and follow their train of thought(s)/ feelings. Because I expect the same from them. 

I respect and do good to other people - because a psychologically integrated people needs to be loving, not because anyone up there monitors their behavior. I am much more touched that someone does good to me out of their own free will; I am less touched that someone good actions are inspired by fear of hell and damnation.

I actually don't have too much to say. I'll need to ponder a little about it for a while! (-:

Which GOD? The Bible states that Jesus is the only door to GOD! All the other doors are robbers and thieves. The real question is where do YOU want to spend eternity? The time is coming when there will not be anymore time... 

There are over 300 prophecies in the old testament that points to the first coming of Jesus (being the messiah) and 1 in every 25 prophecies in the new testament that point to the second coming of Jesus Christ. Are you ready?

I dont believe in Hell as the one you depict.  I agree with you that God would not be a loving creator if he tormented, or whatever, people that chose to not serve him or even violate his laws.  With your son/daughter I highly doubt you'd torture them for the rest of their life or for eternity because of a few mistakes.  We are Gods children, he would not do the same.  

I strongly recomend you obtain the book "What Does The Bible Teach".  You can obtain of free of charge from a Jehovah Witness.  Read page 212 under the heading 'What are sheol and Hades?'.

Read Matthew 5:38, 39.  Jesus knew people had been saying that so he corrected their thinking.  It does not mean, 'he did something to me, im going to do something back' or 'he hit me on the right, let him hit me on the left'.  But that if someone does something to you, just turn away.

To me it seems your thoughts are based on what you've heard and not actual fact.  Again i suggest you do some real investigation.  The best way to find answers is to go to the source

I so agree with what you are saying, thank you for writing it all.
I think that 'God is made in Mankind's Image'.
I don't want to go to a Heaven where there is discrimination and lack of compassion. I don't care if I'm condemned to Hell for having such thoughts either..
The Bible was re-written back in about 300AD. ( Fact) 2 Popes were assassinated by the Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodosia to get any reference to re-incarnation removed.
Fact..the Ancient Gnostic Texts  ( Nag Ha midi) discovered about 60 years ago) Tell a different story... these were texts banned by the Christian Church at that time. known as the Gnostic Gospels.
I know in my soul that I cannot accept the God of the Bible as a loving, caring being that cares for us. Nor, can I accept any religion that condemns, discriminates, judges, lies, lacks compassion, is hypocritical and enslaves.
The Bible as it is now, is a heap of contradictions that is 'Cherry Picked' when required for argument or motivation, and if you dispute it then you are condemned. So be it..
I really don't need to 'belong' to any organized religion to know how to be loving and caring, I don't need intermediates to intercede on my behalf. I can give thanks for my blessings and ask for guidance whenever and wherever I want. 
The Bible can be a comfort to many, but like you, I found for the most part it's message clashed with the concept of a Loving Creator. I don't want my life guided by fear.

Not true my friend! How can God be evil and he pointed out in the bible how sinful we are as the human races. We can't blame our desires and  wants on God,because we do not have it. God made the rich and he made the poor. This is in the bible. Maybe you haven't thought about it,but who do you think woke you up this morning and have food for you to eat every day? Your parents? No, Yes God gave them a brain to work at a job, to make the money to buy the food and he also provide food for you, Even if we don't want to believe it, this is a fact of life. You open your eyes everyday, because of God's mercy! Only his mercy.t's sad you don't realize that. The onliest thing that's evil is us, the human race. The bible says that too.

There is seriousness in your words and a cry for help because you are confused. First of all God choose His believers before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4) and it is He who reveals Himself to the believer, so there is no way anyone can convince you that the Christian God is the only God. But the thing the hinders anyone from this life saving revelation is that they can not put SELF aside long enough for the truth to take hold of them. When you understand this concept I'd stake my life that your view would change. Good Luck

yes God is our creator,but not all of us are his children,only those who have put their trust in Christ as their savior is adopted into his family.

so you can't really use that against God, if you reject Him,He will reject you.
God did NOT create hell for us, but that is where people send themselves for denying Christ.

I fear, as with many scientists, you have your hypothesis proven and simply will pick and choose what facts you need to support it (and CRUSH Biblical meaning).  I'm not sure what sort of victory this will bring you.  The Bible exists as a moral guide, though some lurid tales are certainly included in it.  The main thing to take from  Bible study is the validation of Jesus' life, death and Resurrection, as well as the model He provided for our behavior: Love G-d completely and your neighbor as yourself.

Sorry, somewhere in there I lost track of any question you might have asked.  Christians have written book after book and answer after answer on these subjects.  Your concept of justice is flawed, as is your understanding of the application of the words "an eye for an eye".  Go study some more and see if you can't find some of the books where Christians have discussed these issues at length before posting the same old rants on here.  Thanks.
