If I join the army and pass the DLAB with a high enough score to choose my target language do I get to choose the language I study?

I don't think you get to pick. I have heard it may be possible to switch with someone.

If you score high, you will be placed in one of the most difficult languages: Arabic, Korean, or Chinese. These are the Category IV languages.
So it's not like scoring high will give you more choices. You don't really have a choice - you'll get assigned a language.
When you in process, you may have a chance to write down your preferences, and they'll go with those to the extent that they can. That's what the Army cadre did - not sure how Navy, Air Force, and Marines manage it. And you might be allowed to swap with someone with the same class start date.
But they need to fill up all their classes. If everyone writes down Chinese as their first choice and Korean as their second, and they have three Arabic classes starting, one Korean class, and no Chinese classes - well most everyone's going to end up in Arabic, like it or not!

Yes, you express preference. No, you don't get to make the actual decision. The higher you score on the DLAB, the more languages are open to you...but at the same time, if you score REALLY high, you probably won't be going to study French et al.

no. they will tell you once you arrive in Monterey. at most you may get to choose between the classes that are starting up in the next week.. and if all the classes are Farsi.. Guess what you will be learning?
