How can I remotely access my home computer?
Hey guys, I have a computer at my house that I run a vent/ftp server on 24 hours a day. That gives me access to all my files that I select on my hard drive. However, I would really like to remotely access my entire computer from my laptop, for example: remotely install programs, edit setting, and more while I am elsewhere. What programs/ ways would you recommend?

I have used both UltraVNC and GoToMyPC. My preference is UltraVNC:
UltraVNC Takes a little bit to setup, but once it's done the VNC Server runs on your pc and you can connect to it from anywhere. It's really convenient.

Your opertaing system defines the way you can remote acces into you computer. an easy to use program for beginners is Log Me In. this works for both pcs and macs. Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista already have a bulit in remote access program that is easy to use but takes some knowledge to configure the settings. "You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to remote computers running the following editions of Windows Vista:
Windows Vista Starter
Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Basic N
Windows Vista Home Premium"

Assuming you're running Windows XP /2000 or later:
Enable Remote Desktop on your PC. This can be done at Computer properties under the "Remote settings" section.
Then forward TCP Port 3389 to your PC in your router for access through the internet. Note that this is a potential security risk.

If it is windows and a recent version, you can use remote desktop. There is one issue though; you computer will be accessible and people will try to hack into it. This is primarily true with people in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

You need to set up RDP to you home computer. If you smart enought to get vent and ftp working you should be able to handle this without much help.
Google is your friend. RDP or remote desktop protocol. You shouldn't need any special software if your running vista. Not sure about XP.
