How can I repair my Computer from what I suspect is a virus?

A few months ago, While downloading some torrents, my laptop unexplainable froze. Now, whenever I start up my laptop, I usually have a few minutes or seconds to do something before it freezes, and I have to hold down the Power to disconnect the power circuits and shut it down. I suspect it is a virus, because as I recall, I was unzipping a file to a downloaded Antivirus Installer, because my normal one ran out.

I do not have the money to hire someone to fix it, and I am being asked to trade for a better quality Laptop in 15 days.

So, how can I fix this problem? Remember, I can Access my Desktop and Toolbar for about a minute before it freezes, and I got the start up screen where I can press F12.

Please, Respond soon, and If you need Additional Information, just ask, and I will add some.

Update:

I forgot to mention, I am running on Windows XP Home Edition.

Don't panic!!! I have tackled many types of computer viruses. I am sure you will resolve your issues if you follow the following directions:

To begin with, you need to download "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.40" from http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware...

(The program is very effective in removing any type of computer threats that can cause problems similar to yours).

I am assuming that you can download this software into a removable disk (CD, Flash drive, etc) from the computer you used to ask this question.

Then, in the infected computer, go to safe mode (press F8 continuously when you see the very first screen while booting).

If your computer does not freeze in safe mode, then try installing the program in the removable disk IN SAFE MODE.

After installation, run the program and scan for threats IN SAFE MODE.

After it finds the threat\s, delete it\them (what else could you possibly do).

Then, restart your computer, but, this time, in NORMAL mode.

Probably, your computer will not freeze now.

Let me know whether my procedure works.

Reinstall Windows, the OS is screwed. And read the comments on the torrent next time :)
