Japanese mothers in anime?

Doesn't it seem that in many anime the mother is portrayed as pretty much oblivious to what's happening. I'll give an example. In Konjiki no Gash Bell, Takamine and Gash are always returning home beaten up but Takamine's mother doesn't seem to notice or at least doesn't comment. Another example is in Kyo Kara Maoh!, Yuri 's mother doesn't seem to mind that he, his best friend and his older brother are disappearing down the bathtub for weeks on end. Don't you find this odd? I'm sure you can find your own examples as well.

Update:

No need to pick on reagan since she does have a point. Arigato makes some excellent points as well. Including the parent in the series might not support the plot but treating them solely as walking wallets, person chefs or alarm clocks just seems unnecessary. A little intelligent interaction could go a long way.

yes, I see that a lot!!

and sometimes the children don't care about the mother at all or mostly their parents. . . they don't share their thoughts with eachother and there're really careless when it comes about their parents... I find it pretty annoying sometimes especially when their parents call them and they don't reply respectfully >_>

lol I guess we shouldn't focus on that 'cus it's not important oh well -_-

the parents aren't even shown in most of the animes Dx

a close example I can give is Mitsui and Hanamichi from Slam Dunk, they get beaten up a lot and discharged from the hospital and their parents were never shown!! (Mitsui and Hanamichi are 17 and 15 yrs old so they live with their parents of course)

the same goes with Eyeshield 21, were are Hiruma's parents?! lol it's just that they are not important!!

the way Hikaru(Hikaru No Go) talks to his mother is way too rude because she worries about him, he even thought of living on his own and moving away c'mon he's only 12!!! >_> that's what I found annoying the most...

Ash's mother from Pokemon is a good example of what you said. In the English dub her husband ran off on a Pokemon adventure and we haven't heard from him since episode two, much less have been given a name or a face, and she lets her ten-year-old son run around as well with little to no contact with him.

Going the opposite way, Masane of Witchblade is a mother and the main protagonist.

Maka's mother from Soul Eater is mentioned quite a bit, but never seen. After her husband cheated on her, she just sort of disapeered, and despite that Maka still looks up to her. Without Maka's mother, Maka's father wouldn't be a Death Scythe, which is also a part of the plot. She could go either way as useless or helpful.

The idea that they are just supporting characters without much to them is very common and very true. I've also noticed in anime that the mother of the protagonist is dead more often than the father of the protagonist is, such as:

    -Ichigo's mom from Bleach

-Naruto's mom, although his father is too, at least his father is revealed and mentioned more

    -Oz from Pandora Hearts

-Death the Kid from Soul Eater doesn't even have a named mother who is never seen, as do many of the characters

-Nia from Gurren Lagann has a father frequently mentioned, but her mother is never mentioned (if she ever had one)

And if the father is dead, typically the mother is too, either at the same time or she died earlier (i.e Teito from 07-Ghost (at least in volume one that I have read, his mother is not mentioned); Train from Black Cat (both parents killed at same time) )

I'm sure there are exceptions to that too, but it does happen very often, at least in the works that I've seen.

Source(s): Honestly though, we could go on and on all day talking about the anti-feminism in anime/ manga...

Well, I don't find it too odd. If you think about it, it wouldn't help the plot if the mother was realistic and nterfeering with what the story is about. If the mother's were realistic then a lot of the plot wouldn't be able to happen :P. Also, in Japan it's a different culture, so the mother's are probably a bit different than you'd expect.

    Hope this helps! ^_^
