I feel like the worst puppy mommy ever!?

I went on a nail cutting spree this afternoon, I cut 3 dogs nails without issue. I saved my dachshund until the end because usually cutting his nails is easy peasy. Well, I will never be able to say that again....

I had him propped up, cut one paw no problem, on the second paw, he lunged forward and I cut most of his nail off. The amount of blood was astounding! I immediately put his paw in a container full of corn starch for about 10 mins. When I took it out, he started licking it and it started to bleed more. Again, so much flipping blood!!!! I was getting quite woozy. So, off to the vet I flew, running 2 stop signs and cutting off a car to get there. My vet used some sort of wood stick with a q-tip end to stop the bleeding. Hearing my baby scream like he did just about killed me. I don't think I will ever forget his screams, it broke my heart.

SO the thing is, he is fine - jumping around, eating his bone. I can't get over it. I am getting bouts of extreme crying all day. I feel absolutely awful. And my vet even said to come back in a few days and she would teach me how to cut his nails..... I have been taking care of my boys for years, and this is the first ( and last) time this has happened. I was kind of insulted by her remark. I am not a huge fan of my vet, she is too opinionated, but she cares about my boys, and that's what matters...

Sorry for rambling, but all this has really tried my emotions today.

Anyone else have a story similar to share????

Update:

Ms Manners - you know, ever since I saw that 'PediPaws' product, I have thought it may be nail torture. But since this has happened, I am thinking of giving it a try. I can see it allowing for a lot more control of the length, cutting with the clippers is a one shot deal in my opinion. And I don't like those odds anymore. :)

Update 2:

Devil's angel - I hope your pup is ok. Unfortunately, stuff like this happens and it makes you realize just how much you love and need them.

Update 3:

Golden - thank you for your kind words luv! they are greatly appreciated today! :)

Update 4:

Sweetie - thanks! I am going to get some of that Quick Stop and I love your idea of an emergency kit! I am definitely going to put one of those together. Thanks to you, I get to go shopping tomorrow! Little bright side! And I have a yorkie Chi mix too. I would love to see a pic of yours... email me if you want. Thanks again!

Update 5:

Angela - thanks! Maybe I will take my vet up on her offer. Perhaps it will improve my opinion of her. She really is nice, but so opinionated, like she only wants me to feed my boys Iams and won't accept that I want something better than crap for them. Stuff like that. ;)

Please don't bash yourself up too hard. It was a mistake. These things happen sometimes especially when the dog doesn't sit still. I have cut my dog's quick many many times even today, it still happens but not to the point where I have cut almost the whole nail off. Just a bit but they have bled a lot a few times. I do feel bad for what I have done but it was a mistake. My dogs get so terribly nervous when it's time for nail trimming. But what to do?

Your pup has forgiven you but may get nervous when it's time for nail trimming again. Hope you'll feel better soon.

Being a dog groomer, I've cut dogs nails too short before. The first time I did it I almost fainted because of the blood. I kept telling the dog oh sorry I'm so sorry! While the dog kept jumping around it made it worse, blood all over the table. It was bad enough that we needed to use a cauterizing stick (the one your vet used I'm guessing). Usually the bleeding can stop with corn starch or quik stop (what I use) I'll tell you though, it took me several hundred nail clippings to learn how to do it right and go a week without going too close. Now when I do it I have all the clotting supplies right next to me. I'm very happy you have a nice vet that will show you how to do it right! Also most groomers charge only $5-$10 to do it so maybe that would be an easier option. Don't feel bad, it happens.

Aww I know how you feel. He's ok, and the important thing is you took him quickly to the vet so he is ok. I have 2 boys and have taken care of them for years. It only took me one time of going through this for me to be scared to death. My dog has dark nails which makes it more difficult. I cut too close once and he bled pretty badly. Thankfully I had some quick stop in my emergency kit. If you don't have some make sure you get some. You can get it at pet smart with the clippers. It's only like $5 and can seriously help. I also went to hand filing for maintenance, although for the big dog I now use a Pedipaws, basically it's an electric file. The little dog is terrified of it though. Hope this helps. I know it's easier said than done, but don't be so hard on yourself. It happens to the best of us. Hang in there, your puppy knows you would never intentionally hurt him.

I am fostering a little min pin right now, and her nails were really long.

I cut ONE of them, very carefully, and suddenly there was blood everywhere. :o(

The poor little thing was already scared to death of people, and I felt SO bad watching her limp around with a terrified a look on her face.

Ive decided I am going to use the rotary grinder from now on, no matter what. It took a while to get her used to it, but there has not been a drop of blood spilled, since.

i have a Chihuahua that had a seizure about 3 weeks ago. it scared me and to make it worse it was late at night so the vet was closed and it took for ever for him to call me back. i ended up calling my boyfriends mom who works at an animal shelter. she is finally getting back to normal and wanting to play but it was rally hard for me to get past what happened and it involved a lot of crying from me. i know it might be hard to do but i would suggest that the next time he needs to have his nails cut to do it yourself like you normally would. if you are worried about the same thing happening again you could have someone else hold him when you cut his nails also i would find a new vet if you are not happy with her. there are other vets who will care just as much about your dogs.

sorry you hurt your baby, i have done that myself, with 4 dogs, now 3 cats, had 4 but one recently had to be put to sleep she was 16, 3 ferrets and 2 birds, too many nails to "clip" i finally got pedipaws, it takes some extra time but i no longer have to worry about clipping too much making them bleed and hurt. what your vet used is called quick stop---it takes very little, works better than corn starch ,works really fast, and can be purchased at pet stores fairly cheap.

Just about every dog I've ever owned has had really dark nails, so I don't clip them. I file a little off for maintenance but for clippings, straight to the groomers.

That is part of the reason why.

All doggies sleep alot! its good for him. you're domestic dog would be teething and specific he became separated from his brothers and sisters too early, it extremely is the reason he's biting. Get him a Nylabone. Stick it interior the freezer and enable him circulate at it. If he isn't attracted to it, then weigh down a clove of garlic, warmth it up on a skillet for a a minute and in basic terms rub it on the bone. the fragrance is amazingly appropriate to canines. this chilly softer bone would be great for his teething. because of the fact he became socialized as long as he ought to have been, he did not study a lot of manners. in case your domestic dog bit one in all his brothers, they'd YELP. whilst your domestic dog bites you enable him understand he's hurting you, which he does not desire to do. so enable loose a noisy intense pitched YELP. this would take some practice and you will experience stupid, yet maximum canines react ok. you like him to be social with different canines and persons. If he does not like human beings and basically needs to be with you, this could lead on directly to issues in his destiny. (momma's boy!) produce human beings supply him a take care of whilst they greet him. If he's being good, enable them to grant him yet another! then as quickly as he warms as much as being greeted this way, have your pals supply him 4 treats, one each and every 30 seconds whilst they are first greeting him. this would help him understand that assembly new human beings is a competent element! the selection one rule in potty education is: No effects for removing interior the homestead. exceptionally once you do not capture him interior the act. in case you capture him interior the act, p.c.. him up, maximum will supply up peeing... carry him exterior, compliment him as he pees exterior. in case you rub your canines face interior the urine, yell at him, or harm him, it wont practice him "dont pee interior the homestead" it is going to coach him "dont pee" once you're dogs is afraid to pee in front of you, then it is going to be harder to compliment him whilst he does pee for you exterior. How does he respond once you're saying NO? do not over use it, otherwise it is going to grow to be white noise to him. once you're working, do not basically make him sit down by using you. A domestic dog needs to be mentally activated in any respect circumstances whilst they at the instant are not snoozing. in case you like him to maintain busy while you're working, supply him a toy or a bone to maintain him busy.
