Ticking noise in my cars engine?

I recently installed a replacement engine in my 96 Saturn SL.

I replaced all the fluids with fresh material and cranked it over.

It started but there is a ticking noise that sounds like it might be in the upper right side if the engine.

I'm guessing that one of the valves might be stuck due to the time the engine sat waiting to be purchased.

Any suggestions as to other possible causes or fixes?

My guess is not too far from yours - a collapsed hydraulic lifter. You can try an engine flush, the type you add to the oil and idle it a few minutes, then change the oil. That usually helps but not often permanently. Lifters aren't shockingly expensive to replace (at least in most engines) if you have to go that route. They are normally replaced in sets because of the modest price of the parts.

Or you can drive it a while and see if it pumps back up by itself. It would be good not to drive it on the freeway while it is doing that but it is no problem around town.

might be a rod or piston knocking I think.
