A job at Barnes and Noble and a question about age?
So, where I live, Minnesota, the starting age where it is legal for people to work is 14. I'm 15, but on the application to Barnes and Noble where I'd like to work after school says that you have to be 16 and older. However, when I called to ask if our local B&N was hiring and the age that they hired, they said that they hire 14 and up. So I'm majorly confused.
Also, on the application it asks to check your age and the only options it gives are 16, 17, or older. So what do I put in that area?
@Eich, thanks I really do hope I get the job- one of my favorite stores as well. I'll call again just to make sure and I'll ask for the person's name this time around.

When you phoned Barnes & Noble, did you talk to a manager?
I would say fill out the application to the best of your ability. Where it lists age if they have a blank space where you can put 15 then do it. If not, I would cross out 16 and write 15 there. At this point I would write the name of the person you spoke with (who said they hired 14+ yr. olds). I know it is confusing when the company is saying one thing and a store is saying another.
Just be honest.
Good luck! I personally think B & N would be an awesome place to work! (It's my fave bookstore!)

Maybe the applications come from a corporate office and the majority of the country has to be 16 to work? LIke the other person said, just fill out the application the best you can and put 15 down as your age.
If you do happen to get an interview, make sure you have original things to say. 9 times out of 10 they'll ask you why you want to work for the company. And what do you think they always hear? "I like to read." That's fine to say, but you'll definitely have a better chance if you can say more, like referring to the company perhaps. And if you say you do like to read (which is perfectly acceptable) have some favorite authors and books in mind. I used to work at Borders and it was always funny when someone would answer saying how much they love to read, yet can't come up with an author or book title! And if you have a wide range of tastes, say several authors/titles. Bookstores generally want you to be able to recommend anything in any subject a customer is looking for.
Good luck ^_^

Hello, I'm a head cashier at a Barnes & Noble in Illinois and I can tell you some of the main things we look for.
Age typically is not a factor as long as you're of legal age to work in your state. However we do look for people that are knowledgeable about the products we sell (books, music, coffee). Also an outgoing attitude and experience in sales are a must.
Just make sure you get a chance to speak to a manager when you turn in your application and don't apply when the store seems busy. If we're busy just pick up an application and return when it's slower.
