Well considering if you don't have proper grammar and spelling, no one will really understand what you're saying...so yeah..it's very important. Some say that spelling isn't important, because of the whole research on how as long as the first and last letter are in the right place, you can read it...But it is still very important.
Hope I helped ^.^

As you are a writer, I know you know the answer to this. I'm guessing that this is in response to some essays you are grading. In some cases, it is quite effective to purposefully break the rules of grammar and spelling to get your point across, but you must be fully aware of those rules first in order to break them properly. But in order to be understood properly, you must have good grammar and spelling--unless you are very familiar with the person to whom you're speaking, in which case you may cater to them as much as you like since you know what they will and won't understand.

Mine isn't suited, yet i will no longer be able to take somebody heavily in the event that they misspell too many words. in the event that they have examine books, they could know a thank you to spell the words that they are able to't. as long as i can understand what they ought to assert, then i do no longer care.

If you're chatting with friends, no.
If you're writing an essay for school or work, hell yes.
