Is Obama's speech to our youth free speech or indoctronation?

This is phrased as a proper quesiton. Is it free speech or is it indoctrinating our youth to follow him in their formative years? As it has been formed as a proper question in which proper answers can be given, if it is deleted, the next question is, if it follows Yahoo guidelines and has been deleted, is it a violation of free speech and Yahoo violating their own guidelines because of political bias?

Parents are angry about Obama speaking to their children in assemblies at school. This isn't new, Reagan did that and so did one of the Bushes, but the difference is that that was done on TV and there was the option to turn it off.

If a student is forced to attend this so called speech and then to assess it and write the president on how they could help help, it's nothing less than a captive audience.

Or, would you consider it to be a captive audience? Another question to conform with Yahoo. If it's a captive audience, it's no better than what North Korea is doing.

Do you parents want your children to be exposed to this sort of thing? And other question, so, it conforms to Yahoo's terms.

Do you consider this type of behavior similar to what Hitler did in creating the Hitler Youth movement, pro or con? An other question so it should conform to Yahoo's terms.

Are you going to keep your children out of school on the day that this is going to be done?

Update:

Since I'm not a friend of obama and not privy to his advance speeches or immune to police arrests, no, I have not read his upcoming speech. I hope this answers the question of one poster.

Update 2:

To one poster about he's the president and we should respect him because the majority of Americans voted for him.

Please, if a serial killer were a write in candidate and elected president would you say we must respect him?

Granted, that's unlikely to happen and an extreme comparison, but people are genuinely upset about this and the amount of parents calling in to complain aren't being orchestrated by a few tea party people.

As if teachers don't have enough to deal with. I'm sure most have an agenda and by that, I mean a schedule, from that they're going to have to stop what they're doing to listen to a person who has trouble connecting more than three words together without a teleprompter. Then, these teachers will have to put up with a day or two of what did he say, what did it mean.

Then, these poor teachers will be expected to get back on their schedule after having lost two days to obama speak.

I'd bet my Social Security check that most of the answers, so far, are not what you expected. It's refreshing to me to see how many answers are thoughtful and wise! The speech is not mandatory and whomever has charge of the remote will decide who will see and hear the President. If teachers refuse to watch it, they risk denying their students a historical event! I salute the President for caring enough to go ahead with the speech, in the face of the hateful, fear-mongering "other side".

ADD to Hazbro: I hope people will take the time to read your response! It's not only true, it reflects a good education and common sense! I agree that it is the bigots who just cannot accept anyone with any degree of "blackness" to sit at the desk in the Oval Office.

I honestly don't believe the hysteria that's being generated around this.

The contents of the speech are going to be posted on the whitehouse website ahead of time. Parents will be able to read it and decide for themselves if they think it contains a political agenda but I'd very much doubt it'll say anything except 'work hard, make your parents and country proud' etc. What on earth has a speech like that got to do with the Hitler Youth?

Read back what you've written and realise how crazy it sounds, please do. It seems like every hour is lunatic hour in today's America.

So I'm fifty-five. Politicians came to our schools all the time and gave speeches to assemblies we were required to attend. When cowboy actor Clint Walker came to our junior high to ask us to have our parents vote for Barry Goldwater, we were required to attend. We discussed politics in civics class which was required in all schools. We watched US Govt films that taught us about secret communist cells crawling through the sewers to commit sabotage and spy. We watched Industry on Parade films teaching us the glories of American capitalism. No one whined about indoctrination when armed forces recruiters came to our high school to recruit for the war in Vietnam.

And guess what? No one is really worried about Obama "indoctrinating our children." If you look at the states where this protest is concentrated, it may as well be a map of the states with the highest KKK membership. This is about a black man in the White House who isn't there to shine shoes and cook meals and keep house. This is about racists and bigots who will never accept a black president and who don't want their children to do so either. This nut job protest was launched by Glenn Beck, a moron and a Mormon, the church that until recently taught that all blacks were made so by being cursed by God and were thus barred from the priesthood.

Barack Obama is president of the United States, elected by the majority of Americans and our children should be taught to respect the President as I was. This "stop the indoctrination" movement is a movement of 100% white bigots and racists, mostly men, who in their heart of hearts fear Obama and all black men have larger penises than they do. Yes we live in a Democracy, but Democracy doesn't mean we have to give credence or air time to every group of ignorant, stupid, misinformed fools who get excited about some issue.

Personally I just wish white trash throwing up the "socialist" smoke screen objection to Obama would just be honest and not pretend it's anything other than race hatred that they're masking as a philosophical objection because they are too cowardly to just admit what they really want is to see the darkies returned to the back of the bus. Fortunately, in most cases their children will grow up rejecting their idiot parent's world view.

And Cameroni, you mindless idiot, Obama's birth certificate has been viewable online for over a year. Pull your head out of your ***.

I don't think it is either. And since nobody that is criticizing the speech has actually read it, it is just more fear tactics by the far right wackos.

I think when the speech is over with, it will be praised by most as an uplifting, motivating speech by our president to the youth of America to study and work hard to be successful in school and life.

My child will be watching the speech, just like I would have let him watch Reagan and Bush, Sr. when they did the same.

Much ado about nothing...I think Republicans are just digging a deeper hole for themselves.

It should be up to the parents AND the child to make the decision to attend or to sit it out doing something else. If Yahoo deletes questions like the one above, than it is indeed violation of free speech. If parents and children are not given a choice then we as a society are continuing the path towards socialism. Small gov is the key to freedom. I would not go so far as to compare Obama's behavior to Hitler, however.

I'm a student and parents can write a note to the school saying you are to go to the library or something if they do not want you to view it...I personally am going to watch though I highly doubt this is really about educations. It seems Obama is planning early to hit the next group of young voters and since I have yet to see it I will hold off on if I think it is an indoctrination...Though I bet it probably is he will just use that 15 minutes to talk about himself.

Oh and you silly people you know this is not what Bush Jr. did.He read a book my goodness and Regans was at the end of his term..You just wait.

    but you wont

im tired of Alarmist and Neo Cons, they're used to be a sort of Professionalism in the republican party but now you guys are just as bad as the Liberals raising the flag everytime somthing happens

    1. Free speech does not apply on Y!A. They can delete your question for any reason.

    2. He's just telling the kids to stay in school and get good grades. If that's indoctrination, then it's the good kind of indoctrination.

    3. I don't compare anything to Hitler because of Godwin's Law.

Haven't read the speech yet but I am already under the Obama spell. I have the hammer in one hand the sickle on the other and I am ready to go work the governments sugar cane fields. Oh and yes I am giving all my belongings up so that Obama can divide them against the population. ha ha ha ha c'mon he is just going to tell kids to eat their veggies and if your kid is that weak minded that will get hypnotized by Obama and start worshiping a red flag, then shame on you for doing such a poor job raising your children.

  • 1 decade ago

Well, it seemed to be free speech when three other presidents did it, so it's different when Obama does it?

Go ahead and keep your kids home that day, that way they won't interfere with the other kids who want to listen.
