What is a 'settlement for divorce'?
My husband keeps asking for one, and even my attorney asked ME what he was talking about.
I thought it was just division of assets?
Does this mean I have something he wants?
Does he want money from me? b/c that's what this sounds like..
Oh. I c. I don't have a job so I'm not sure what he's gaining by all of this, is what I'm getting at.
I "may" be recieving a check in the mail for something in the future, maybe, do you think he wants part of that $?
I know cabbie luvr is very wrong, b/c going before a judge costs a lot of $, it will not save me attorney fees, and I hope to avoid that (although I know it won't happen)

The parties choose to settle instead of allowing a judge to decide. If you are awarded something in the divorce (ie: money, etc... ) that's also a settlement.
In the end, a judge does have to approve the settlement -- so have at. You may end up better off and you certainly will accrue fewer attorney costs BY deciding to settle instead of continuing on in a court case.
Judges don't set attorney fees - attorneys charge by the hour for time spent on your case. Refusing to settle means more hours with the attorney and more costs for you.

It means he wants some of your posessions. It can be up to 1/2 of your assets based on how much he was involved in those assets. Also, you can ask for a settlement for devorce too if you want his posessions. It is just that, a division of assets.
But he may be asking for some kind of payment (money usually.) He then would never bother you about splitting your stuff because you paid him off in a way.
