Can you tell me if there is a chapter and verse in the bible that tells us how we get our sins remitted?

Some just say by faith, others say just accept Jesus, and some say for us to confess, others say to ask a priest for absolution or to pay penitence, but what does the bible actually say.

1 John 1: 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    Hebrews 9:22

    (22) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

    Hebrews 7:27-28

    (27) Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

    (28) For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

A worrying number of evangelists nowadays omit to emphasise the need for repentance in order to have our sins forgiven. This makes the Christian faith sound like a kind of insurance policy for which you had better arrange cover so that you can then relax and forget about it. This is what Peter told those listening to his sermon in Acts: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+2...

This message is repeated throughout the New Testament.

We are also, however, taught to continue in the faith so that we do not fall away from our secure position. http://bible.cc/2_peter/3-17.htm

1 John 5:16 to 17 explains the difference between mortal sins and venial sins. It says venial sins ("sins not unto death") are easily forgiven (which is what venial means). But it also says that "sins unto death" (which is what mortal means) cannot be forgiven the same way. They require something more. Jesus provided for the forgiveness of such sins when He gave His priests the power to forgive our sins in His name (John 20:22-23).

    John 20:19-23

    Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.

    2 Corinthians 5:18-20

18Now (A)all these things are from God, (B)who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the (C)ministry of reconciliation,

19namely, that (D)God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, (E)not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20Therefore, we are (F)ambassadors for Christ, (G)as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be (H)reconciled to God.

    James 5: 14-15

    14Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for (A)the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, (B)anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;

15and the (C)prayer offered in faith will [a](D)restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will (E)raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
