What is your definition of "proselytize"? And how about "preach"?

I just saw this one, "Proselytizing is a way to witness to people about the love of Jesus and attempt to save their souls from hell."

My definition of proselytize is an attempt to persuade another to follow your religion (pretty much the same as Merriam Webster) only I believe this to be implying an "uninvited" attempt.

Whereas to preach is to teach someone about your relgion's beliefs and doctrine. (which I feel means someone who seeks to learn it.)

Update:

Oh, and what faith, if any, do you follow?

Oddly enough, "proselytes" were Gentiles who became convinced that Judaism was correct. We don't know what kind of rituals or training they went through to become more-or-less accepted into the Jewish community but the final step was circumcision. Bottom line: these proselytes were Gentiles who became Jews. We don't know how this took place, or who if anybody preached the faith of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We do have a few references to them, especially in the Book of Acts.

Preaching has had a lot of definitions over the years but it has one major purpose: the communication of truth from the speaker to a listener or audience. Dr. Kenneth Wuest in his "Word Studies" series describes the preacher (kerux, in Greek) as a herald who would deliver messages from the king. These messages were to be delivered with sincerity, formality, and gravity so that the messages would not only be heeded, but obeyed (paraphrasing).

As for my faith, I am a Southern Baptist by choice!

I tend to agree with you, but uninvited has a negative connotation that is not entirely accurate either. I have seen many preaching on the street corner or somewhere public. Some have a sincere approach and while uninvited it is not unwelcome. The there are the screamers that are both.

I believe to truly proselytize one must live the life. Then as people get to know you they come to know God. So in short they wish to learn and you willingly share the gospel. Think how Jesus taught. People came to him to learn and he taught.

I agree with your definition of proselytize.

Preach I agree with you as well though, I can't say I feel preached to when in circle with friends. I think that is a different more equal way of learning more about spiritual paths and beliefs.

    I'm an eclectic pagan

I don't think Jesus wants me to go down the street screaming at everybody. No, I think I offend more than I preach the Good News. So I don't know what to do. Perhaps I'll just start rebuking the demons out of Catholics and the like in the name of Jesus Christ.

Conservative Real Christian. Proselytize---to convert or attempt to convert as a proselyte; recruit. To induce someone to convert to one's own religious faith.

To induce someone to join one's own political party or to espouse To convert (a person) from one belief, doctrine, cause, or faith to another.one's doctrine. +++Preach---to proclaim or make known by sermon (the gospel, good tidings, etc.). to deliver (a sermon).to advocate or inculcate (religious or moral truth, right conduct, etc.) in speech or writing. +++" Word Origin & History preach--late O.E. predician, a loan word from Church L., reborrowed 12c. as preachen, from O.Fr. prechier (11c.), from L.L. predicare "to proclaim publicly, announce" (in M.L. "to preach"), from L. præ- "forth" + dicare "to proclaim, to say" (see diction). To preach to the converted is recorded from 1867. Preacher (c.1225) is from O.Fr. preecheor, from L. prædicatorem (nom. prædicator), lit. "proclaimer." Slang short form preach (n.) is recorded from 1968." 1 Corinthians 1 (Amplified Bible)

21For when the world with all its earthly wisdom failed to perceive and recognize and know God by means of its own philosophy, God in His wisdom was pleased through the foolishness of preaching [salvation, procured by Christ and to be had through Him], to save those who believed (who clung to and trusted in and relied on Him).

Romans 10 (Amplified Bible) 14But how are people to call upon Him Whom they have not believed [in Whom they have no faith, on Whom they have no reliance]? And how are they to believe in Him [adhere to, trust in, and rely upon Him] of Whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?

Mark 16 (Amplified Bible) 14Afterward He appeared to the Eleven [apostles themselves] as they reclined at table; and He reproved and reproached them for their unbelief (their lack of faith) and their hardness of heart, because they had refused to believe those who had seen Him and looked at Him attentively after He had risen [[d]from death]. 15And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature [of the whole [e]human race]. 16He who believes [who adheres to and trusts in and relies on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] and is baptized will be saved [[f]from the penalty of eternal death]; but he who does not believe [who does not adhere to and trust in and rely on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] will be condemned. 17And these attesting signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18They will pick up serpents; and [even] if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.

19So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and He sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord kept working with them and confirming the message by the attesting signs and miracles that closely accompanied [it]. Amen (so be it). 16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed and made appointment with them. Matthew 28 (Amplified Bible) 17And when they saw Him, they fell down and worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18Jesus approached and, [a]breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them [b]into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit ,20Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you [c]all the days ([d]perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. [e]Amen (so let it be). Psalm 119 (Amplified Bible) 88According to Your steadfast love give life to me; then I will keep the testimony of Your mouth [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying it]. 145 I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord; I will keep Your statutes [I will hear, receive, love, and obey them].

John 14 (Amplified Bible) 15If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands. 23Jesus answered, If a person [really] loves Me, he will keep My word [obey My teaching]; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home (abode, special dwelling place) with him.
