Can you remember your first coherent 'thought'?

I can,

I was really young, about 18mths old. I was sitting down and looking at my feet. I know I thought 'there's something wrong with my toes ' and I tried to tell my mother but all that came out of my mouth was babble and crying.

On each of my feet, 2 of my toes are joined together to the first joint.

I was thinking that maybe the first thought is somehow connected to a 'sense of self '.

It was many decades ago, children did not have experiences as stimulating they do now to encourage learning.

I cannot remember any thing else about my early years..they were eventful enough though..my father was in the military and I left US on a troop plane for UK...can't recall any of it...isn't it strange.

Update:

Thank you for your answers,

The other thing is is that...I know that my thoughts at the time of the experience weren't the thoughts one would expect of an infant.... so are we born wth the capacity to think coherently?... if so could this be evidence for the existence of a 'Soul'...

Update 2:

I've extended this because I'm having trouble deciding on a best answer.

So please edit away and talk to me about 'thought and soul' connection. TIA

My first coherent thought was "what is this place and who are these people".

I was very small standing in my yard looking at my house.

I felt like I had been abandoned in a strange dis-compassionate world.

My first real coherent thought was back when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I was on the living room floor watching superman the movie at the time. All I can remember thinking is that the world is an extremely cold, dark, scary place, that doctors don't treat their patients as they should, and that there should be more people like superman who really care about others. I also remember thinking he was real at the time and was thinking "If he can do this, why can't I do that?", which sparked my evolutionary thinking about my own capabilities and what I can be compared to what I am.

In many ways, it was my first actual step into both reality and philosophy (although I didn't realize it at the time). It was also my first step into self-reliance, independence, and the rewards/benefits of humanity. Those basic initial thoughts soon spun off into other thoughts through out the years and slowly grew into a way of thinking and way of life. My beliefs in humanity building a utiopian society began from that point as well. The hero may not exist in my minds eye anymore, but the ideals I learned from him live on. And it all started from that moment of coherent flashes of thoughts.

we have "coherent thoughts " much earlier in our lives than 18 months old but the memory of those may be dim.

The correct word is recollection, the ability to remember that exact moment and put it in perspective.

Most of recorded/studied/documented recollections of childhood without the aid of hypnosis begin at age 1 (12 months old) and gets better and better as the child retains more inputted information (filing system of memory is adjusted and set up)

Personally I remember curiosity. why is that like that? what does that one mean? What did he say and what did that word mean? what is in the box? why is the dog not there? I remember that the adults had a hard time explaining things such as

    1. gravity- why doesn't something fall off the wall? such as an insect. Ants can climb up and even hang upside down climbing. Ok- I will accept that they are very light but what about lizards and geckos? surely the weigh a few grams.

    2. death. you said the neighbors dog died. what does died mean? where did he go? Where is he now?

  • Wow!! That is insane that you have a memory that early in life, the earliest that I have was when i was 2.5 years and I was behind my sister on the monkey bars and I had to watch her fall and her bottom teeth cut through her lip!! All I can remember thinking is absolute shock, i could not even grasp any of the steps of what i should do in that intense of a situation, from there however my mom came running and everything was handled from theree.
