should i worry about our baby in the 16th percentile?
my girlfriend is 39 weeks pregnant with our baby girl. she went to the doctor today and was told that our baby is measuring small. the doctor performed an ultrasound and concluded that our baby is in the 16th percentile. he also told us that if the baby isnt moving alot then he will have to induce. the amniotic fluid level is still good inside the sack. when we asked what being in the 16th percentile could mean and should we worry, the doctor responded with " i dont know ". he then told us to watch the babies movement carefully and that concluded our visit. we understand that our baby is larger than 16% of babies at 39 weeks, but that is small. also, the fact that the doctor wont give us any information is starting to worry me. is there a problem? what should we be worrying about? and please if you dont know, please dont guess.
the answers i am explaining came from the doctor and not the ultrasound tech. the doctor is the one who performed the ultra sound, and the doctor is the one we direct all questions to.

The baby is fine. Your doctor's only concern is that at her small size, she may not be getting enough nutrients to survive in the womb, which would mean she would be better off being induced so she can put on some weight. I know you can't help it, but try not to worry.

the same sort of thing happened to me but i was 36 weeks and got a scan because i had a bleed and they plotted the size of the baby she was below the 50th centile when she had previously been above the 90th and the thought that maybe the placenta had stopped working the told me to monitor the movement and come back in 2 weeks for another scan i was worried sick and i didn't get much information from them either the just said there was enough fluid around the baby then when i went back in two weeks the re scanned me and the she measured on the 90th centile again and they said she must have moved i was so upset because i hadn't slept worring about all sorts of things were wrong and she was born perfectly health 6 days early at 8lb 8oz so please try not to worry till your rescanned also if parents are small then so will the baby
hope everything is well

My son has been in the 7th to 10th percentile his whole life. :) He's always been healthy but he has to go in for more doctor appointments than usual just for weight checks. At first, this really had me worried, but now I know, they just want to keep tracking him and make sure he doesn't stop growing.
So basically, I think they like to keep thier eye on the small ones. Don't worry, if your doctor isn't giving you straight answers, feel free to tell him your frustrations and say the his vagueness is causing you to be a bit concerned.
Congratulations on your little one on the way!

Never ask the ultrasound tech medical questions, they are not doctors and won't give you accurate answers. I'm surprised she even gave you any response.
Measurements in the womb are not accurate so I would make an appt with your normal doctor and discuss your concerns
