If the universe is expanding then what is it expanding into?

    Well...

There are a variety of hypothesis which attempt to answer that question.

One involves the multiverse. It proves (mathematically) that it is possible for multiple universes to exist. Now it may be possible (not proven yet) that we are expanding into that sp[ace, or next to it.

Another answer involves dimensions. Yet another involves space-time and the possibility that there is a such thing as null space.

Your question touches on the fringes of science. Areas which are somewhat new to science and which are still being researched.

Perhaps we will never know. Or perhaps we will be able to definitively prove these things. One way or another, none allude to a creator.

  • The universe Isn't expanding "Into", its expanding Outward

The Universe & cosmos are in a spiral spreading further apart.

    Outer space has No boundaries.

sigh best to post this in the astronomy section (or better yet search this Q gets asked alot)

alright as i said before to somebody else a minute ago

we dont know its expanding we have evidence but it aint concrete.

we have .000000000000000001% information on the universe, all of it is on paper and general observation through scopes.

every theory be it the big bang or parralel universes etc are all just as plausible as one another.

hmm alright if i was to say x=1-1000

that means every number from 1-1000 is X it doesnt mean cos its 5 that it cant be 250.

basically give it a few thousand years so we can advance more and get up close to examine stuff then you can get a clearer answer

The universe is a self-contained phenomenon. There is nothing "outside" of it to expand into. Space itself is simply growing larger.

there is no evidence to support your belief that the universe is expanding INTO something. We know of nothing beyond the universe, only that the universe is expanding

It's expanding into nothingness. The "universe" consists of measurable stuff, such as stars, planets, and electromagnetic waves.

The universe is expanding... proven by science and technology.

    What into..we don't know...

Maybe that's why we have so many belief systems...

The unknown is disconcerting, seeking the unknown is exciting.

Nothing - space itself is expanding. It is meaningless to ask what is outside of this region because space doesn't even exist outside this region.

this is a physics question more than an R&S question

but it's just expanding, but dark matter is causing that expansion to behave in odd ways as well.

Supposively the universe is being created as it expands.
