Stuck brake caliper repair method?

My pickup had its right front brake lockup.

I started pulling to the right and then at the next stop sign I had smoke coming out of the wheel well.... I quickly pulled over and got a tow home.

I jacked it up and pulled the wheel off and then had to hammer the caliper assembly off of the disc.

How to you fix this? Do they make a rebuild kit or to you just purchase a new assembly?

You don't give the vehicle type or year, so I'll just speak in general terms. The caliper is very simple in its construction, it has a body a piston a square cut seal and a dust wiper seal. Most common problem with calipers is when a plastic piston is used and it will actually swell in the bore. Most manufacturers have changed to stainless steel pistons but a few of the older ones are still around. Mostly this was used in the Ford production line. The brake line leading to the caliper is subject to failure as well. This can take place internally and you won't see the bubble inside the line that prevents the caliper from releasing. Secondary seal within the master cylinder can hold pressure if the pedal feels abnormal. Just a few things to check, hope this helps. You can rebuild the old or replace with a rebuilt, the choice is yours. A rebuild kit is about $ 12.00 if that helps you to decide

Without going through honing the cylinder(s) and making sure you don't have excessive wear on the piston(s), Piston seals and boots may not have any effect on your issue. ANY time I find a sticking caliper, I just replace it with a new or reman caliper. In my opinion, they're not worth my time to try and rebuild. If you still have a problem, you've eliminated the caliper already. You may be on the right track with suspecting the master cylinder. I would push HARD on the brake pedal with the engine running, then shut it off and crack the line at the caliper in question. (make sure a helper is NOT still pushing the brake pedal LOL) If you get a pressure squirt, and the caliper releases, you may have a stuck master (could also be a blockage in a line). If the caliper is stuck, it shouldn't squirt (that much). And it may not release when you crack the line. Tough one, good luck.

I would suggest swapping in a new caliper. It's not worth the risk. If one caliper was to lock up while you were on the freeway... lets just say the chances of you dying that day just skyrocketed.

Replace the caliper with a new one. The parts store will most likely require a core. So you'll have to give them your old caliper.

Then it's just a matter of swapping it out putting it all together, filling up the reservoir (master cylinder) with brake oil(fluid) and pumping all the air bubbles out. If you don't know how to bleed your brakes you can google it or get a repair manual that will explain it.

you could do both .but with my exsperience I would replace the brake calipers then the brake hoses next. PS is it a FORD! HAHA! just kidding. good luck.

hey scott ! your best bet is just get a new caliper and a new set of pads. it,s a whole easier then fooling around with overhauling the old one.

go with a rebuilt caliper, doing it yourself just isnt worth the hastle.

rebuilt is clean, and assembled corectly. dont forget to clean or use new slider pins and lube with the recomended type of pin lube,

also, dont matter if its FORD or cadillac brakes go bad.
