Ok....need some advice. Suppossed to be doing a 24hr urinalisis....?

you know where you collect all of your urine over a 24 hr span & turn it in for tests & evaluation to your Dr. Wellll, my stupid self accidentally forgot to pee in the pee-catcher & went in the toilet ( you know like a normal person LOL) Sooo...I dumped out the urine & figured Id start over. Now my BF is stressing telling me I cant use the same container, that it will be contaminated & will err my results. He says the very small amounts of urine in there will turn in to bacteria. I told him Id just wash it out w HOT water but he says then the urine will be contaminated by chemicals in our water & my results will still be tainted. BUT in the instructions given to me with the urince container say if I run out of room in the container that I can use an empty milk container or something like that as long as all the urine is kept COLD & that it is brought to the lab the same day i finish the test. So if I start on Sun AM & take the urine to the lab on Mon...I should be fine? Do I need to be worried about the VERY small amounts of tap water that may remain in the collection jug?

Update:

Im a diabetic & this is to test how my kidneys are functioning & to help determine if I need meds to protect them from damages causes by diabetes in my body.....

your friend is right.you need a new jar and to start all over, this time ask for a urine hat ,it will fit in your commode;that way you won't loose any of the 24 hr collection.also keep a large bucket of ice in the bathroom with the jug in in .this will remind you to keep it on ice

Source(s): I've had to do this test several times, because of kidney stones. also I've been a nurse for 31 years............

Whatever you do, don't wash it with bleach. Bleach will kill the bacteria in your urine and completely screw up your results. And you might need to be worried about the tap water if they test for calcium, magnesium, and iron or fluoride for the tests, as tap water contains these nutrients. You would probably be best off finding a new cup or buying one at your local drugstore that you know is sterile before redoing your test results. Diabetes is one thing you don't want to mess with.

if you wash the container out with hot water you will be fine. i would imagine they are just testing to see how concentrated your urine gets in order to check your kidney function. concentrated urine means your kidneys are doing their job. dilute urine means you have a problem.

Just rinse the container out, and let it air dry between now and Sunday, Sunday morning begin your test, in the container. Keep it cold like it says, DON'T USE BLEACH!!!!!

You shouldn't worry but if it is that much of a concern wash the container with bleach, and dry with a clean towel. If the bleach can't kill it then nothing will. You should be fine and God bless

Ya it sounds like just keeping it refrigerated for the wait would be what they want you to do. Doesn't sound to me that it will get contaminated.
