Car Storage? For-freaking-Ever!?

My roommate moved out this week, under somewhat unpleasant circumstances. She has taken all her stuff (clothes, bed etc.) but she left her car. It has been in our driveway for 6 months – it does not run and she has made no arrangements to pay us a storage fee. Un-running car in the drive way was not a real problem while she lived here, but now that she is gone I am not sure what to do about this car. My first thought is to call a wrecker and sell it for scrap, but I don't have the title and I doubt this would be legal. We have asked her to remove the car several times with no result, I would imagine with her not being here she will be in no hurry to move it out of our drive way. (out of sight out of mind)

So could someone tell me, how long do I have to wait to do something about it? Who could I call that could give me the answers? BTW we live in Cuyahoga County, Maple Heights, Ohio.

Thank You for any help.

Update:

the car is still registered in her name - but the tags have been removed.

Send her a letter telling her she has 3 weeks to get the car out of the driveway. Keep a copy for yourself. Send it certified mail, return receipt requested. ALSO publish the notice in the newspaper Classified section for a full week. (Do not give your addrss in the ad! Just use her full name and tell her to get her car.) If, after that time she does not remove the car, have it towed away.

Maple Hts is a nice area. First- is her name off the lease? If it is maybe you can call the police and ask them what you can do about an abandoned car that doesn't work and is in it driveway. If the car were to be in the street rather than in your drive, the police would likely haul it away.

Is the car still registered or the tags expired?

I don't know if you would be responsible for a vehicle in the drive or not. If she were on the lease but is not now on the lease I'd think the owner would be responsible.

    Good luck.

You could tow it with a rope out of your driveway onto the street parking and then report it to the parking law enforcement as abandoned. Should take a week or two to get it off of the street. If you want to be really ornery with immediate results then you could drop it in a no parking zone, near a fire hydrant or in a fire access zone. That would be pay back pretty nicely. Fine for parking, probably expired license tabs, towing, storage, etc. $500 -600 minimum plus $50 storage per day. Would probably be required by law to be paid in order for her to renew her drivers license.

It has become abandoned property. For example, the city of Delaware, OH will tow the vehicle in this situation. Maybe Maple Heights has a similar program. You can call the police to see if they have any info or advice.

You may have to go to court and get the vehicle declared abandoned. Then a tow company can come and get it.

The car needs to be cleaned thoroughly; you need to add fresh fuel in the engine and undertake all kinds of repair work before stashing away your car. Thus, you can keep your car in condition even for a long period of time. You need to take extra care while storing your car as you can’t afford to lose it any way. Both of them have their pros and cons and hence you can take your decision as per your convenience and preference. While there are more chances of damage in outdoor storage, indoor spaces safeguard your vehicle from weather elements such as rain, hailstones, direct sunlight and more. In terms of storing your vehicle, you need to ensure that there is moving space around so that it can be repaired or serviced whenever needed.
