Can the cigarette smoke on clothing cause a child's ear infection?
I have a 9 month old baby who just had his 2nd ear infection. We took him to the Dr.'s and had been treated by a different Pediatrician, not the one both my sons have seen since birth. She let us know she has only been in the practice for 6 month. We asked how & why a ear infection happens because my first son never had one. She said from cigarette smoke and gave no other reason. My husband smokes and she probably smelt it on him and/or read it on the chart. I let her know we had never allowed smoking in our home or car nor do we allow my children to be held while smoking. She looked at us as though we were lying! Then she told us it was from the odor left on his clothing. After he has a cigarette, doesn't matter how long ago, the odor on his clothes will cause a ear infection.
Is this true? Could something other than that cause an ear infection?
I had no idea. I thought we were doing everything right to protect them from smoke. I'm not going to tell him to stop smoking because it won't work but looks like he's getting a lame smoking jacket for Christmas.
Thankyou
Our pediatrician is great, we have been seeing him for 5 years now. He was not available when I took my son in so we were seen by this new lady. I will definitely ask him about this here soon when we go in for his next set of shots. She was rude and snooty about it. The whole visit became very awkward and uncomfortable. Thank you for the info. on bottle feeding and ear infections. My son holds & carries his own bottle and will take it and lay on the floor to eat. He sometimes sits up but prefers laying. I'll be sure to only hold and feed him. Thank you.

That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. Newly practicing doctors are often judgemental. I would suggest that you find another pediatrician. Yes, newer studies have indicated that parents that smoke in the home have infants and toddlers with more frequent ear infections. However, babies also tend to suck a bottle. The milk or whatever they are drinking can back up into the eustachian tubes and infection can set in because of this. That is only one of the reasons that it is not a good idea to give a bottle to a child that is lying down in the bed. They should eat, then be put to bed.
If you chose to continue with this pediatrician, ask her to give you a pamphlet or written Information on this odor of cigarettes causing ear infection. Thing is, she smelled the smoke on all of you, because she is not a smoker. Due to this fact and the ear infection she is looking down her nose at you as parents. Screw her! Find a more caring, family oriented pediatrician. Preferable one that has been in practice for a while. Ear infections have been a childhood illness forever. I was a child that had recurrent ear infections my entire childhood. I had tubes placed in my ears 6 different times as a child. No one in my family smoked. Ear infection can be viral or bacterial, the same as many other childhood illnesses.
Good Luck!

According to a study done in 1998; second hand smoke on a persons clothing as well as in the persons hair or on their skin, does indeed cause inner ear infections in children up to age 5.
