Christians, a very serious question for those who believe that Jesus is God?

Please do not answer this if you don't believe that Jesus is God.

Please, please star this question and if you choose to answer please pray first for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I have been in very deep bible study and prayer over the issue of Jesus bieng God for many months now and there is one thing that is bothering me.

Why didn't the disciples make any effort in their preaching work to convince Jews and Greeks that Jesus is God.

We see certain themes preached over and over again: Jesus is the Son of God, Jesus is the messiah, Jesus died and was ressurected, salvation comes through belief/trust in Jesus, Jesus is now in heaven sitting at the right hand of God, repentence, baptism, receiving the Holy Spirit, living in holiness and putting aside sin.

But no effort is put forth to explicitly prove that Jesus is God. I will admit that at times it seems as if this concept is just simply understood ... as if no explanation is necessary. But just imagine if you were a Jew at that time. How strange would it be that the messiah has arrived and he is not only God's Chosen One but also God Himself. I can only imagine that that would have been an incredibly difficult concept to accept OR to even CONSIDER.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not trying to argue against the trinity... I just want to know: why didn't the disciples try to prove that Jesus is God right along with proving that Jesus is the messiah and that He was wounded for our transgressions and that He rose from the dead?

Update:

please understand...i'm not asking "is Jesus God?" ... my question is... "why didn't the disciples try to prove that He is God when they were proving that He is messiah?"

Update 2:

2Q&Learn - Thank you for answer but I specifically requested that only those who believe Jesus is God to answer. I did this not to turn a blind eye to the possiblity that Jesus isn't God but rather to prevent a "trinity debate" from getting started. Believe me I must have read at least fifty such debates on y!a. I have also sifted through many websites devoted to proving and disproving the deity of Christ, the watchtower's included. I also asked that non-trinitarians/oneness believers refrain from answering because this particular question only relevent to those who believe that Jesus is or might be God. Someone who is convinced that Jesus is not God would heve no reason to ask such a thing (and the answer would be obvious). Anyway, I am trusting the lord to reveal to me exactly who the father and son are. The lord seems to be moving me closer and closer to the trinity but I in no way wish to be guilty of idolotry so I am humbling myslef before Him as much as I am able and waiting.

Update 3:

Thank you so much to everyone who has answered. I have been praying and trusting the lord on this issue for a very long time now and it has been a very difficult struggle for me. I have no desire what-so-ever to be guilty of idolatry and I have been doing my best to humble myself before the lord and wait for His answer. I take Jesus' words about seeking very seriously and I know that I can trust Him. Over the last few days the Lord has brought me to 1Tim 6:13-16 and I think I finally have my answer.

13In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever

Update 4:

These verses clearly show that the father is the Lord of lords and King of kings. This honor is also bestowed on Jesus in Revelation. How can there possibly be two Lord of lords and King of kings?

Thank you so much to everyone. I appreciate all the answers and am very grateful fo ranyone who may have prayed for me. Thank you very much.

    Karen,

While all answers would be speculation at best, I think the simplest would probably come closest to the truth.

Proving that Jesus was God to possible converts would be impossible. It is not something that can be proven to ANYONES satisfaction. Such a concluscion would have to be arrived at which each individual person.

It is a matter so intimate and personal, that for a person to be settled in their own mind, it would have to come from within. No doubt with the Holy Spirits convicting of each individuals heart.

They just simply told His story. What He did, and what He said.

The irristable concluscion would be obvious.

But it is a concluscion that must come to ones OWN heart.

You can see this still today. No matter how much 'proof" and how many verses are used, if a persons heart is NOT prepared by the Holy Spirit then they will NEVER see it.

It goes to the matter of ones personal heart and its sincere desire to REALLY know the heart of God.

    Hope that helps.

    ....theBerean

P.S. I'll be praying for the Lord to prepare YOUR heart if needed. Seek His face, Karen and He WILL reveal Himself to you.

Source(s): P.S. Karen, after reading some of the answers here I think I should add something. The Apostles preached for years. Realtivy speaking, we only have a FEW of the thousands of sermons they must have preached in their lifetimes. But if you go by their writings they DID proclaim the Diety of Christ. Example: "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as LORD and believe in your heart...." also, "Believe in your heart that Jesus is LORD thou shall be saved" The point is "LORD" proclaims His Diety. Even to the jew, only JEHOVAH could be confessed as LORD. I believe they would have understood THAT. But as I said above, they were not even living up to the light they HAD received- so OF COURSE they would reject Jesus as Messiah AND Lord.

Good questions Kristina ! 1) God is the Trinity: God The Father, God The Son, God The Holy Spirit. 2) What makes you a Christian ? be letting Jesus Christ be Your Lord, Protector and help You to be Your best ! 3) Jesus is Lord God ! see answer 1 as God is made up of 3 Entities in 1. Jesus is also the known as "The Word" (the bible) 4) Jesus came to Earth to be our Messiah (meaning the Chosen one or Saviour, to deliver us and save us from hell - and hell can be hell on earth if one doesn't have strong faith in Jesus. You are right ! 5) Don't worry about negative things you see on Yahoo, like your going to hell if you do this or that, or youre a sinner if you do that, remember Jesus already came to Earth as a man in the flesh and did away with sin ! That is power that overcomes anything and everything negative !

Jesus' disciples did not fully understand who Jesus was while he was on earth. It was not until after the resurrection and the ascension that the Holy Spirit came to comfort and counsel the early Christians. As the Berean has said, this is a revelation that comes from the Holy Spirit.

Although all the 'clues' are there in the Bible, the triune nature of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit did not become apparent until after the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ Jesus.

The disciples couldn't try to prove that Jesus was God because they could barely get their heads round him being the Son of Man, the Son of God and the Messiah. That revelation came gradually, as the Holy Spirit opened the ears and eyes of the early Christians so that they could begin to comprehend the full impact of Jesus' life and death.

God knows when we are ready to move on, spiritually, and it is the Holy Spirit who introduces us to the beauty and the glory of the risen Lord. At least, that has been my experience.

Such a good question! I'm so glad you asked.

Edit: I acknowledge John's gospel starts out with the fact that Jesus is God. But please ask yourselves when were the gospels written? Mark between 50 and 60 CE, Matthew late 50's or early 60's, Luke 59-63 CE, and John sometime between 70 and 85 CE. Acts was written between 63 and 70 CE. Jesus had died before the gospels were written, and the gospels were not written till after the Holy Spirit arrived. The gospels are narratives of what happened at the time, and not an analysis of events in the light of hindsight. I honestly think the revelation of the divinity of Jesus came to his disciples after his assencion. Had they fully understood who Jesus was while Jesus was alive, they would have said so, in no uncertain terms! But it was not the right time for that divine revalation - it came later.

My gosh, girl, if you did even just a little Bible study on what the disciples taught and believed, you will see that the Apostle John's very first sentences about Jesus in his gospel, establishes that Jesus is indeed God manifested in the flesh.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1) -" And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." (john 1:14)

At His birth Matthew records the birth of Jesus this way; "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." (Matt 1:23)

These are just two scriptures which establish the deity of Jesus.

Jesus is God and the Bible contains the truth.

It would be difficult to explain everything in a short answer.

I would suggest you visit the below website. You will get all the answers, for the below questions and many more.

    1) Did Jesus really exist?

    2) Is Jesus God?

3)Why should I believe that the Bible is accurate, or the word of God?

    4) What is the Holy Trinity?

5)What is so special about Jesus? Why cant I just view him as an ordinary man or a teacher or a prophet? Why should I see him as God?

First I am not trying to put you down, but you realize that the Bible does not mention every single second during Jesus ministry and the early church.

Second Jesus on many ocasions told His diciples that fact:

21At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

22"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

23Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

    Luke 10:21-23

17In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. 18I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me."

19Then they asked him, "Where is your father?"

"You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come.

    John 8:17-20

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

    John 1:1-2

7If you really knew me, you would know[a] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

You have allowed the confused and misguided of this world to confuse you.

Take a look at a man and his son. Does it EVER even enter your mind that either one or both is not human? Then why do you believe what the unbelievers claim, that a "son of God" cannot be God?

God's Word itself declares that the children (including sons) of God are Gods:

Psalms 82:6 -- I said, "You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High."

A son is not some lesser being than his parent. A son of God, is God!

You ask, "Why didn't the disciples make any effort in their preaching work to convince Jews and Greeks that Jesus is God[?]"

But the Bible shows quite clearly that the disciples preached exactly that:

Acts 18:4 -- And he [Paul] reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.

And what did he try to persuade them?

Acts 9:20 -- Immediately he [Paul] preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God.

    {Remember, son of God = God. Therefore, he preached that Christ is God.}

1 John 4:15 -- Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

1 John 5:5 -- Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

2 Corinthians 1:19 -- For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us--by me, Silvanus, and Timothy...

Hebrews 4:14-15 -- Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

    And let's not forget:

John 1:1 -- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The fact that Jesus is God was a major part of the Gospel message that the disciples DID preach!

Yes, the Jews found it difficult to accept. Even when Jesus himself declared himself to them, they understood perfectly what he was claiming, but they could not accept it.

John 10:33-36 -- The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God." Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods" '? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?

Jesus explicitly said, "I am the son of God." But the Jews understood correctly that he was claiming to be God -- "You, being a Man, make Yourself God."

The proof that Jesus is God is scattered throughout the Bible. The Apostles were not commissioned to PROVE things to people; they were sent with a message. It is up to US to prove what they say is good or not:

"Prove all things; keep that which is good." -- 1 Thessalonians 5:21

    Just as the Bereans did:

Acts 17:11 -- The[ Bereans] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things [that were preached] were so.

First, They could not accept that Jesus was the Messiah. They definitely weren't going to accept that Jesus was God.

They were after Jesus for saying that he is the Son of God, wanting to stone him.

Second the disciples were told to go out and teach all nations that

there is Salvation in the Name of Jesus.

And even still they couldn't accept that.

As today People still won't accept Jesus. Just as in the days of the old people despised Our Lord, and wouldn't accept him. So it is today.

    Jesus Messiah,

    Name above all Names

    Blessed Redeemer

    Emanuel.

How Awesome is Our Lord and Savior.

    Jesus is Immanuel.

    Immanuel means "God with/among us".

    Jesus was/is the Word LOGOS.

    LOGOS means "Divine Creative Principle".

    _______

Jesus did not have to tell them to prove that He was the Savior/Messiah.

Only YAH is our Savior and Jesus is our Savior. This is from both the OT and NT.

That Jesus is God with/among us in human form is a realization that comes through the Helper, the Holy Spirit.

    _______

The Apostle John does call Jesus 'God' in the First chapter of his gospel. John continues that theme showing His divinity throughout His gospel.

The other apostles also show this though it is not as blatant.

    _______

Remember Jesus asked who he was to the apostles? And He said, 'it is not yet time for this to be revealed'.

    _______

Today, as then, it is not time for everyone to understand. This will be seen and understood as God wills and in His time to each person.
