There is a bed bug infestation on the third floor of my apartment building. They have had it since January?

and i moved in April 2009. They failed to let me know. I found out about it a week ago, along with many others on the second and third floor. I am six months pregnant and am scared for when my baby gets here. A couple moved out two weeks ago and had to throw out all there stuff. They had no option but to break their lease. They lost everything. I talked to the leasing department and they do not want to let any of is out of our leases. I called the health department but the woman said that she could not do anything because they are exterminating. The thing is, they are making the residents pay for the extermination. So right now i dont have the bed bugs but if i were to get it i would have to pay 75$ each time they come out. How is that fair, especially since i did not cause it and want to move out before i get them. Right now i am stuck, i have a baby on the way and am broke, i cannot afford to have to get rid of my things. I need help. Could someone please give me legal advice about what i can do.

Unless it states in your lease about bugs they don't actually have to do anything. It really sucks and so many places will hide bugs really well and not even let you know they have any before you move in. Your two choices are pretty much either move out or do anything you can to keep the bugs away from your home. Bomb your house and spray and everything before you even get them. Once you get them they will be hard to get rid of but you can do everything possible to prevent them now.
