Can one move a hard drive with an existing OS to a new motherboard?
So I have built a new system (#1) with all new parts .. no hard drive though... and I want to take the hard drive out of my slower rig (#2) that has Vista on it and place it into system #1...
I know when i boot up system 1 with system's 2 hard drive in it, it is going to give me the blue screen of death but what if i backed up system 2's hard drive and booted off of the CD in system #1... will it let me format system 2's hard drive and reload windows on it, in an effort to have it detect the new motherboard? Also will Microsoft be OK with letting me use my license again? I am using the same hard drive just changing the hard ware it is connected to...
think about it...

Windows 2000 xp and vista look at your hardware and if booted on a new motherboard produce the blue screen. I have had limited success by moving all cards graphicd sound and specifically the network card from the NEW to the new OLD then booting old pc in safe mode (see instructions for setting to boot from cd and safe mode bash f8 till asked to boot in safe mode Now install all drivers and try again) Now try safe mode on the new pc and install its drivers again safe mode. The idea is to gradually introduce the new hardware to windows easier said than done. If the cpu is p3 and upgrade quad p4 good luck!!!

BEST WAY move hd to new pc and boot from your install disk then select repair the windows. .Now that works ok!

would you not want to get your hdd installed configured first, ive swapped before in desktops which were same model but slightly different spec and i had loads of prompts to reinstall drivers.
