Hunter or riding horse?! Help!!?

I've done a few showing classes with my IDx and I've always entered him as a hunter. However, I was talking to the organiser of a show I am going to on Sunday (who ran a show that I attended last month) and she said that she thinks he would do better as a riding horse.

So now I'm confused! Please be honest about which he would do best in!

Here he is:

http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs231...

Update:

I've hedged my bets and entered both lol.

He's my dressage/jumping horse really, showing is just a run out and we just do little local shows.

:)

I think he is a horse that could do either depending on how you produce him.

in the first picture he looks very riding horse to me (please take at least 6 inches off the bottom of his tail).

However the 2nd and 3rd pictures make him look like a hunter.

So with a bit of condition and top line on hime and produced like a hunter he could do light weight hunter classes.

Little bit of weight off, and some serious schooling to move like a riding horse then he could do that.

Could you not find a BSHA affiliated show, and ask the judge there.

Most local shows will let you do both anyway.

Zakiit. A riding horse is a type of horse, it falls in between the show hack and the light weight hunter, it is NOT just a horse who can do a bit of everything, that would be the riding club horse.

I would say he is a light weight hunter. The problem always comes when it is a general hunter class (not split into weights) as against the heavier hunters he would seem more like a riding horse! I think you are going down the correct route but entering both as it really depends on the judges preference for weight and the competition in the ring!

In reply to the US person who asked about the clip in your first photo. It is a blanket clip. This type of clip would suit a horse that has regular exercise, is turned-out in the field and does various events at the weekends. The coat is removed completely from the head, neck and flanks, leaving only an area of hair that looks like an exercise sheet over the back and hindquarters and on the legs. The hair on the legs is left mainly for warmth and protection. It is a popular clip in the UK and one of my horses currently has one.

    p.s GOOD LUCK

Not having been around horses for some time, my guess would be that a riding horse would be something suitable for all sorts, which your chap looks like he could do, but then again he also looks like he could do the hunter bit (have you hunted him yet?) too as in two of the pictures he looks a tad heavier. In other words as though he could carry some more weight.

As you have said, you could always enter both and see what comes up. He does look like a lovely chap, one which I feel I could quite happily sit on! Oh why did my back get broken? Times like this, when I see a horse I like, I wish I was back riding! Could never afford it now, not even lessons or hacks.

I would say he would make a fine Hunter by American show standards "unless you are showing AQHA or APHA. In the second picture he is not as collected as he could be and looks a little heavy in front, but that last photo shows a nice collected canter. Your hands are very low and look to be touching the horse in pic number two. Pick up your hands a little bit and that will help the horse bend properly at the poll and keep him from getting hallow in his back and getting down on the forehand. I like his trot and I think it looks very correct, but in America we tend to ride with a lower head, but i really like they way he looks. His head is perfect on the vertical or just a little in front.

Good Hunter and lower level dressage. But then I am an American and things here are different. I like him and I would not mind showing him in some hunter classes.

He will also make a great riding horse as well.

I don't really have an answer for you, don't even know what a "riding horse" is supposed to be (I'm not in the UK :)) I just wanted to ask you what the purpose of the clip is in the first pic. We had a horse brought to us with that clip and I couldn't for the life of me figure out its purpose! Thanks :)
