If Republicans want less government intrusion...?

then why do so many of them want to pass laws that allow the government to tell you who you can and cannot marry?

Update:

I'm sorry I thought it was the previous administration that was worried about the "defense of marriage act" - not the liberals.

Update 2:

I agree that the Constitution argues that it is a state issue - except that some states had banned "interracial marriages" until the Federal government had to intervene - those pesky civil rights.

Wow, most of these "answers" don't even approach the topic of the question. This isn't a rant about republicans but a question about the hypocrisy of republican "ideals."

Republicans want deregulation in the market, but when it comes to allowing a couple to receive insurance benefits they want to intervene.

In a few years the Fed will have to intervene to remind each state that there was a civil rights amendment passed that gave equal rights to all. It's unfortunate that some states recognize this and some refuse to.

Look at California - only in Cali does the "will of the people" mean the removal of constitutional rights. What would happen if we all signed a petition to end women's suffrage or to repeal other civil rights legislation? Would that be allowed just because it went to a public referendum?

Interesting aside... Both the Republicans and Democrats, recently (especially since Reagan, and going to present day), have increased the size of the government in each passing term. The difference being that the Democrats don't run on a platform of small government.

Just throwing in my 2 cents.

umm i believe it was the dems who voted against the civil rights act? yes.. they did. its not intrusion. its just common sense. its morally wrong for two people of the same sex to get married. its unnatural. this argument gets old. guess what. the majority of americans are STILL against same sex marriage. its not just the government.

your argument is like saying "oh i hate because it doesnt let me sell drugs.. damn those intrusive laws." get over yourself.

or maybe i can make the argument... if liberals want more intrusion, then why dont they have a government tell them who they can and cannot marry?

    moron.

I have noticed that when Republicans say they want less government intrusion, it applies only to economic matters. With regard to social matters, it's the exact opposite.

It is pretty much why they lost control of the Congress in 2006 - because of voters like me, the fiscal conservatives - realized that in power, the Republicans were just like the Democrats - figuring they could spend their way into permanent incumbency. They were wrong.

GOP are basically Christians who were all descendant from the Puritans that moved here.

The Puritans followed extremely strict social control rules related to all of these things.

It should be a state issue like the Constitution says, not something the Federal Government decides.

  • They also want government to decide who can and can't have an abortion when it is clearly none of their business.

That is just one law "intruding". Liberals want to pass dozens of laws intruding on our lives.
