I don't want my cat to get outside when someone opens the door. She loves water.?

We just moved into a new apartment that has a door that opens to the outside. I have always had an apartment that opened to a hallway so, if my cat got out, I could chase down the stairs. She loves water. The spray bottle does not work with her. She takes showers! I have lived in a couple places. I am so, worried she is going to get out. When we come in and accidently let her out.

Once you enter the door you walk up a flight of staris.

And please do not reply and ask me why I moved here if I would be worry about her getting out.

It looks like gates do not work.

(My boyfriend thinks he's going to make something.)

My cat is at 11 years old. But she acts like a kitten.

So, far when she's at the door I keep telling her 'no' and she either runs up the staris or I carry her. We just moved in Yesterday.

Thanks cat people!

Good suggestion by Kala as one of my 4 kittys tries to get outside primarly for the grass. My other three kittys LOVE sunlight so when its sunny out they try to get directly outside where its at because they sun bathe. So try opening curtains or blinds to a few windows that get the most sunlight ... also open a few windows if its nice out because cats LOVE fresh air.

Another suggestion which has worked like a charm for us is apple spray. You can usually find it at your local pet store. Its a bitter apple spray that you can spray on plants to keep them from eating the plants inside the house but my vet told me to spray it around the door and it will keep them from running outside. Worked for our cat, hope it will work for yours! Good luck! :)

Maybe if she is looking for grass to eat outside you could grow your own inside. I know they have a type of cat grass they love to eat. My cat escapes outside to eat the grass all the time and I have worried about him getting lost. Two times he has been out over night and I was a worried mess. Maybe try a cat harness and take your cat out for walks - I know that sounds weird (I actually tried it once) and your cat may not adjust, but it is a thought. Maybe that will curb the desire to go out all the time.
