Joining the air force. These are the jobs AFSCs that I'm interested in. High asvab score! What do you think?
Im enlisting in the air force. My asvab score was a 91. Individual scores were 89 Mechanical, 91 Admin, 97 electrical, and 91 general. I have an Associates degree. I'm married with no children (yet.)
I really need information from current/prior service members. If you could go back and choose any AFSC what would you pick? I need more to go on then what airforce.com and about.com military has to offer. Please only Answer if you have experience or credible information with these careers.
Here's what I'm looking for:
I would love to have a job that mostly requires working in the DAY time. I want something that CAN be stationed at many bases. I appreciate that deployment is part of the job and the sacrifice but it would be nice if I didn't get deployed every year. And YES, I know hoping for a medical job without going open gen is useless but hell, let me dream.
Given all that take a look at my list. Do any of these jobs conflict with what I'm looking for? Are any of these jobs more in line with what I'm looking for? Can you think of jobs that would be good for me that I haven't listed? Do you have any information to volunteer about your own AFSC?
(I'm not interested in being a linguist. Or ATC which is my husbands AFSC.
My List:
4t031 Medical Lab tech
1w031 Weather
6c031 Contracting
4R031 Diagnostic imaging
2a732 Non Destructive Inspection
1n031 Intelligence Applications
2E2x1 Computer Networking and switching systems
4c031 Mental Health Services
2n031 Public Affairs
Thank you for your help!

The Air Force is going to be really impressed with your mechanical and electrical scores. They can get qualified people in the other areas.
Here's my say on your choices:
Medical Lab Tech: Most bases have hospitals and labs. Should be mostly day work, but the possibility for night shift also exists. Deployment is probably nominal unless you have mobile hospital attached. (Wife used to work in a military hospital).
Weather is 24/7 all over the world. So are the people who measure and report it.
Contracting: Few bases do this, but is is almost all day work with little chance of deployment for extended periods (site surveys and such).
Diagnositic Imaging: Usually occurs only at bases with regional hospitals.
Non Distriuctive Testing: Very good job, but I can think of only three bases where it would be needed.
Intelligence Applications: a wide open field subject to almost anything.
Computer network and switching systems: Needed at every base. Possibility for night or weekend work during upgrades and cutover (same as the civilian world). Deployment to major in-country bases (maybe).
Mental Health: Regional Hospitals
Public Affairs: probaly the most flexible, but also a relatively easy-to-fill slot so it may already be filled.
My two cents is that Computer Networking and Switching Systems would be your best bet. It makes use of your strongest talents. It's needed everywhere, and it looks great on a resume when you get out.
