Some believe that after a period of observation, cats learn that humans interact with each other using their vocals. For cats, they interact with each other through touch (nuzzling, grooming) hence cats normally come to you and start nuzzling or licking you. Your Maine Coon has probably picked up on the vocal aspect on human interact and is having a conversation with you. He probably thinks it's a more effective way to get your attention than trying to find the perfect moment to get close to you to nuzzle you.

A cat vocalizing (when not in any form of pain) is very enduring. Mine will vocalize periodically. When the dog gets to go outside to do her business but he can't go outside like she does, he meows in protest. When his bowl is empty, he'll come to me and meow. Or when his litter box needs cleaning. Mine mostly meows in complaint, but sometimes it's to announce his presence especially when he's been upstairs and sleeping for awhile and we're all downstairs, he'll start meowing after he wakes up and comes dashing down the stairs.
