Has anyone ever experienced this at an ultrasound?
I had no idea that this was going to happen! I went to get my 19 week ultrasound hoping to find out the sex (and also that everything was healthy which it was .. and is the most important thing)... BUT they told me they followed a code of ethics that said they are not allowed to tell me the sex!! Can you believe that? They won't even check in that area at all because it is not medically necessary. So I could of found out the sex but they said no they would not do that for me. How weird? I didn't know that clinics did this. How unfair!

Yes I had to go private and pay to find out the sex. It was annoying. I asked at my 12 week scan afterward, "when will we be able to find out the sex" and they explained to me then that I would have to go private. I then waited til my 20 week scan and asked anyway. But nope. We went to babybond. It cost £79 and it was a great experience. They gave us 10 pictures and they are double the size and clearer. The sonographer takes more time and it is a great experience. I have an article I read I will post at the end of this post. It is quite common for NHS hospitals in the UK to do this. Somehow, many women on here havent heard of it. The reason from what I hear aside from the "not medically important" crap is apparantly some religions abort certain sexes. I say f*ck them, we live in the UK, those religions are not dominant! Anyway i will get myself mad if I dont stop now. By the way I am in Scotland. Where are you?

A lot of ultrasound tech and doctor offices won't tell you the sex.
I've heard of this before.
Technically, no u/s tech nor doctor is allowed to say exactly weather or not it's a boy or girl.. for legal reasons.
They really just look and see if there a male parts present, and if they don't see any, they leave it up to the mother to decide if it's a girl.

It sounds like the army hospital i go to. I find out at my 23 week on the 23rd. I hope they tell me what it is. Try going to another 3d or 4d ultrasound clinic. They have deals for mothers wanting to know the sex of the child specifically! Goodluck and im so sorry!

wow i would change my doctor so fast if i were you. if they act like that now can you even imagine what they will do later. and im pretty sure they need to look in that area for medical purposes because they are suppose to check everything just to make sure its all growing right. even when the mom says she doesnt want to know the sex the doctors still find out they might now record it but they will know when they do the ultrasound. like i didnt even know that she had checked for that until she said well do you want to know what it is, so why would she already know if she hadnt asked me first.

Are you in United States?
U/S technicians or doctors i some countries are prevented from telling the parents the sex of the baby to prevent foeticide such as female foeticide (abortion) in some Asian countries. The other issue would be them trying to minimize chances of being sued if they tell you boy (Girl) and it turns out to be a girl (boy).
My U/S tech said that he was certain that it was a boy but did not put it in the record to avoid the chances of being sued.
You can go to different clinic for U/S but ask before hand if they would be able to tell you or not.

I've never ever heard of something like that. That is actually the weirdest thing I've ever heard about an ultrasound appointment. I would get a new doctor/clinic.

That's the policy at my hospital. It's the only place in my town where you can get an u/s done. I drove 3 hours twice to find out the sex of my baby and I still don't know.

That did not happen to me. Maybe try another doctor office. I would want a different doctor if the doctor wouldn't do what I wanted him/her to do considering it was as simple as telling me the sex of the baby.

Wow, I have honestly never heard of this! I have had many ultrasounds...and they always are more than willing to share the news of what sex the baby is.

unless its your regular OB/GYN, then they really arent allowed to tell you the sex of your baby. i know its STUPID of them to do this but i went to a clinic (planned parenthood) and had an ultrasound at 18 weeks to try to see if they could tell me the sex of my baby...they said they werent allowed to tell even if they could see. so i just had to wait until my 20 week ultrasound at my regular OB for them to tell me the sex of my baby.
