Greinke wins the Cy Young award...?

Seriously... besides me, did anyone see this coming before the season started?

Well done. Wonder what odds you'd have got on a bet before the season?

I've been to about 100 Royals games since '04.

He debuted as a 21 yr old and had a sub 4 era in 24 games -- Royals' pitcher of the yr.

Zack's stuff was always electric, never a doubt there wasn't cy young ability with him.

Struggled in '05, almost a 6 era. Set several records in a bad way, earned runs, hits per 9 etc.

Not far into the season questions about his mental/emotional condition came up and in '06 he left spring training only a few days into camp. He has never had an injury issue.

I thought he was done as did a lot of the sports media around here -- thought he might try the Ankiel route.

It eventually came out that he has severe social anxiety disorder.

But he came back, spent most of the yr in the minors with ups and downs, finished up Sept. in KC with similar results. Struggled at the start of '07 spending some time in the pen. Came back to the rotation at the end of August and that's when he turned it on.

I doubt anybody realistically expected him to be the best pitcher in the league in '09, but at the same time nobody around here was really surprised to see him do it. It was always just a question of could he put it all together and keep it together for a whole season.

I thought it was a done deal on Sept 27th when he struck out Mauer and Kubel with the bases loaded and a 3 run lead. And to top it off he struck out two more back to back with 2 on and 1 out in the 7th. His 97th and last pitch was 98mph.

  • No one saw this coming. I had my doubts about Greinke because he came in with so much hype but he hasn't lived up to it until 2009. He is one of the best pitchers in the game and he had a great season. Maybe the Royals can get him some help so he and the Royals can contend in 2010.

No one in their right mind would have picked anyone from KC to win anything. He was hurt in his first seasons. Normally KC brings people up from the minors much to early, because they need lots of help in the big leagues. This normally hurts young prospects, but not in this case. In this case the supporting crew for him was terrible, furthur adding his credetials

If I read your link correctly, you asked people if they thought Grienke had what it took to win a Cy Young at some point in his career.

You never stated that you thought he'd win it in his career, you asked if others thought they'd win it. And even if we assume you agreed, you specifically said "Not necessarily this season".

So good job in really not predicting anything at all.
