The Secret War against Sweden

This sounds like a dingbat, but some bloody strange things wweere going on in and around Sweden in the early to middle 1980's. This is the first I've read about any British/American involvement, but it reminds me that Sweden's teritorial waters were regularly and releatedly intruded upon by Russian and Warsaw Pact submarines (and sometimes by Russian surface ships) and there were some pretty tense stand-offs between Swedish and Soviet naval forces. All this is very well documented: you don't need to look for evidence in conspiracy theorists' writing, as mainstream newspapers and TV reported this frequently.
Almost every week, Swedish destroyers were dropping depth charges on Russian/Pact subs that had illegally entered its territorial waters. Ao the question arises - what the hell were the Russians doing? What were they looking for? What did they hope to achieve, as pushing a neutral neighbour to the brink of war is not something any sane country does lightly.
Not to mention that from the point of view of a submarine and its crew, depth charges hurt. Those subs must have been returning to home ports with expensive damage - and of course they were risking being sunk.
And if the Russians were leaning on Sweden, then of course Britain and the USA would offer covert help to balance things out. So was our Royal Navy in there too giving assistance?
Also, from the 1950's onward, northern Scandinavia has been illegally overflown by Soviet air forces on quite a lot of occassions - Sweden had to maintain a world-class air force to be able to intercept and escort intruders out. In the late 1940's and 1950's, there were also what looked like rocket attacks into Lapland, as if a Soviet rocket base just accross the Pole was test-firing them and didn't especially care where the bits went. Norway and Finland also reported seeing rocket trails in the sky, and debris landing in the northern wilderness.
Knowing all this, we have to ask - what the hell was going on?
