Jesus said I didn't come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it, what do you think He meant?

The merriam-webster online dictionary gives a few definitions for the word fulfill. It says in 2a: to put into effect.(execute) b: to meet the requirements of. c: to bring to an end. d: To measure up to(satisfy).

3a: to convert into reality. b: to develop the full potentialities of.

Paul wrote in Colossians 2:14-16, Blotting out the handwritings of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man judge you therefore in meat, or in drink, or in respect of any holy day, or of the new moon, or of sabbath days;

If I insert the above definiton of fulfill into what Jesus said about the law then it would read, Christ came to put into effect, meet the requirements of, bring to an end, convert into reality, and develop the full potentiality of the law. If all these definitions apply to the word fulfill then can I conclude that the law has been brought to an end in it's former state so that it can be brought to its full potential in the believers life? Did this happen because Christ met the requirements of the law when He came to earth?

In other words, if I'm reading what Paul wrote correctly, Christ removed the ordinances of the law(sabbath, koshers, holy day, new moons, etc.) to bring out what those things couldn't which is righteousness by love, not law? To simplify it, did the means by which righteousness comes change from ordinances of the law to the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by Christ crucified. And if I attempt to live under the ordinances of the law, am I under the old covenant and therefore void out what Christ finished at Calvary?

To those who believe this question is aimed at eluding a righteous life because we "under grace" are gravely mistaked and have missed the whole point of the question.

Update:

@angel, i'm actually simplifying what many people have made hard. guess you couldn't tell by the lengthy question! lol!

Update 2:

@dis-orie; actually He said not one jot or tittle will pass away until all be fulfilled. That's what He did at Calvary; you don't need a theologin to understand that.

Update 3:

@crazy pirate, then please explain what Jesus meant. Certainly He would not have made this statement if He did not mean it.

    SELF EXPLANATORY ISN'T IT !!??!!

JESUS Fulfilled ALL of the Law......

When you can tell me what man fulfilled or obeyed or abides in all of the OT Laws, other then Jesus....then i will perform all the OT Laws . BUT i can not nor could any mere man.....But ONLY ONE Could and that's GOD Himself who came in Flesh to do so.....and HIM Fulfilling ALL

now through HIM and HIM ALONE can we be Justified, sanctified, and perfect(true sincerity)and be cleansed from ALL unrighteousness[by His Blood]......through CHrist our Complete and whole Atonement

    who this man after He gave ALL ONCE and for All...sat down !!! (other words FINISHED / DONE / COMPLETE ) now is at REST who is now OUR REST(Sabbath) in whom we Trust and obey and rest in and through HIM and HIm alone....{ by His Spirit the Holy Ghost we rest in Christ}

    Isaiah 28: 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.{Holy Ghost}

12 To whom he said, This is the REST wherewith ye may cause the weary to REST; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear ."

Not any day, nor holy day or in any tradition or custom or deeds, or rituals or drinks or meats, or any particular guidelines outside his own and no other standard but the STANDARD HE IS and was meet by Him and Him Alone . Not in any building or temple or monastery or mosque or statues or any certain prayers or words or deeds or actions, other then HE HIMSELF ORDAINED of HIMSELF whom HE is the LIVING WORD !!!

WE are the ONLY temple in which He abides and Dwells in....as it is written so it is

2Cr 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Yeshua, Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fullfill it.

The only thing that was changed was that we no longer need to do blood sacrifice for sins, as His blood paid the price.

The other things are still in place.

YHWH GOd does not change, so what He said is still going. INcluding the Seventh Day Sabbath, and the feasts, etc. He said they are forever and a sign of our covenant with Him. He keeps His promises to us, why cant we keep our promises to Him.

We keep the seventh day Sabbath at home and the feast days, because there are No Seventh Day chruches around us. Also, many Seventh day churches dont allow the Holy SPirit to come in fullness, and that is wrong.

So we keep sabbath at home, go to church Sunday, and praying more there will learn these truths.

God says He never changes, and those things are to be done FOREVER>

FOREVER is just that, forever. IS your forever up? Mine isnt.

but, keeping His commandments doesnt save us. Only the blood that He shed on Calvary saves us. But we obey because we love HIm and that allows us to keep our free gift.

WE are told in John that if we dont obey, we will be severed from the vine of Christ, cut off and wither and die. Thats new testment, so those today who say obedience is not still required, dont real the Bible very often. Even clear thru into Revelation we are told to get clean and stay clean.

WE are called to live as Yeshua Jesus lived, in full obedience, and to live a live of holiness, and righteousness. WE cant do it on our own, but we can in Him. When we are truly born again, He gives us the power to overcome sin, not to remain in it and count on greasy grace to barely slide into Heaven on. God forbid.

He didnt die that we remain in sin. He died that we not only be saved, but saved from sin and the effects of sin, and to have an abundant life with Him, In HIm, of love, peace and joy and all that comes with it.

    Great question.

Jesus fulfilled (Genesis 3:15) And I shall put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will bruise you in the head and you will bruise him in the heel.”

Jesus is the "he". Satan is the "you". Almighty God is speaking to Satan. The "woman" is Jesus' earthly organisation, the group that is truly obeying what he asked...both then and NOW

(Acts 20:20) while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.

WHAT group/s do the house to house?

And with women??? (Psalm 68:11) Jehovah himself gives the saying; The women telling the good news are a large army.

Any groups that exclude women are not approved.

jesus was very clear that all the law and prophets stand until all has been fulfilled... since christians claim jesus must come back to fulfilled many prophecies in the OT, then by jesus's words, all the law and prophets stand, with not the least marking made void ... unless either jesus lied, saul/paul lied, or church tradition lied, or some combination of the above...

    basic question answer.

We had to sacrifice things to forgive our sins, so we could know God. Jesus fulfilled this law, by becoming our sacrifice for sins. Through Jesus we can now know God on a personal level, which sin prevents us from doing.

So Jesus' death 'met the requirements for sacrifice for sins' as by your definition. Fulfilled it, by meeting God's requirement for sins.

Jesus met the requirements and fulfilled the law and now through Jesus we are sin free. And being sin free allows us access to God, for we are seen perfect like Jesus now we are his.

take care, message for anything else or more.

THe One True Living God, Christ Jesus is plainly telling us that no one can truly fulfill all the law except Him as God in the flesh.

Jas 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Jas 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

Jas 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Jas 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

But he didn't fulfill it, he did not. And to all those Christians who saythe law's impossible, must be sinless, original sin etc...I have to ask why god just didn't send him in the first place. I mean, why bother with the law for 1000 years if nobody but god's son can fulfill it? Why bother and subsequently condemn so many others to hell (in both lives)?

Don't make it complicated. Jesus lived his life and followed all the laws so we don't have to. We just trust in Christ who did it for us.

No that was the point- no one can keep the law and all that it requires.

Almost the opposite of what he meant when he said that not one letter of the law will change.

I leave such trivia to the theologians and stick to the beatitudes.
