This is actually a really good question. As someone said earlier it is the worlds oldest occupation, though I doubt it was the first paid occupation for women. In ancient times, some civilizations were matriarchial societies unlike today's patriarchial. Women in some countries were held in equal standing as men and were paid the same amounts. I think perhaps prostitution was the first paid female occupation in European countries, but in more traditional or native civilizations I'd say farming was.

I don't think it was that. Because men could at that time use absolutely their force to take any woman. The real question would be : Are women and the Establishment encouraging prostitution ? Yes.

It is unlikely that prostituion is older than any other trade. Spinning and weaving, domestic service, and midwifery are all as old, if not older, than prostittuion, and all were common ways for women to make aliving in the ancient world.
