Query on the role of Short Stop (Baseball)?
I would like more information on the role of short stop. I know why he is there and his basic functions, but I would like more info on the following points please
1) The short stop operates between 2nd and 3rd Base, does he move to a position between 1st and 2nd if the batter is left-handed?
2) who is responsible for covering the area between 1st and 2nd? is it 2nd base? if so how far will he move off base if he already has a runner on 2nd?
3) why is there no dedicated SS between 1st and 2nd?

1) No he does not, shortstop stays between 2nd base and the 3rd baseman.
2) The second baseman is like the shortstop between 2nd base and the 1st baseman, shortstop is pretty much an extra name because there are only 3 bases, ha ha.
3) 2nd base is pretty much the shortstop of the right side of the field.
Make sure no fielder is standing on a base, this is not their proper position.
The 1st baseman should be in front of the bag (1st base) and no more than 10ft from the bag.
The 2nd baseman should be near the middle between 2nd and 1st base, but closer to 2nd base.
Shortstop should be the same as the 2nd baseman, but between 2nd and 3rd base and a little closer to the outfield. He is the leader of the infield, has the most range (ability to move around in his position), and should be the most vocal.
The 3rd baseman will be within 6 feet of the 3rd base line and in front of 3rd base.
I don't know how good your knowledge is of baseball so I explained the infield well to you. Please don't take this as questioning your intelligence.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Many teams play what is called an "overshift" against lefthanded batters who almost always pull the ball (hit it toward right field). I work at Reds games during the season, so I saw a lot of this when Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr. were on the team - against many teams, they both batted against an overshift as long as there no runners on base. However, even in such a defense, the shortstop is more likely to be positioned right around the 2nd base bag, not between 1st and 2nd.

The second baseman normally is positioned between 1st and 2nd. How far off 2nd he stands will depend on the batter's "handedness" and his tendencies as far as pulling the ball or "hitting the other way" (e.g., a righthanded batter who hits the ball more frequently to right field). A baserunner on second may have some effect on where the second baseman stands, but that's more likely to come into play if the runner is fast enough to be a threat to steal 3rd or if he represents the tying or go-ahead/winning run. Then playing the second baseman closer to the base makes the runner have to be more cautious and take a shorter lead off 2nd.
3) why is there no dedicated SS between 1st and 2nd?
There are only 7 players out in the field. Outfields are too large to risk putting only 2 players out there (except in extreme, one-batter situations that are too rare to get into here), so you only have 4 players left for the infield. Because there are more righthanded batters than lefthanders and more batters are pull hitters, you're much more likely to cut off potential hits by putting the "extra" infielder on the left side of the infield.

1. no he does not 2. 1st and 2nd basemen it depends on the speed of the runner, the speed of the 2nd baseman, the hitter, the Pitcher, the park, the game, the wind. 3. i have seem team take their cf and put him in between first and second base to become a ss between the two bases, but this is a rare thing. most time there is just not one. when they were making up the rules, they thought that 9 players were enough.i agree with you, there should be a 10th player.
