Why does life have to have meaning?

A common argument from Theists about Atheism is the the Atheist world is bleak and has no meaning. We wander around with our relative morals searching for that which we cannot find. Apparently a life without meaning is no life at all.

But why do we (being humans) have to have meaning? Do we expect other animals to have meaning as well in their lives?

Update:

Donut Tim - I find that Atheists are less likely to think that there must be a point or reason for life. Most Atheists believe in evolution, which goes against a meaning for life.

Update 2:

David - I think you need to attend some basic biology classes. You will see that humans are animals, just like dogs, cats, monkies, mice and platypi.

    Interesting question.

Because of our biological makeup, we all naturally "want" to stay alive and enjoy things and pursue goals. But as for a "point" or "reason" that we exist, there are many strange ideas.

I've often wondered why people, especially atheists think that there must be a point or reason for life. (Religion is all about explaining a reason for life so I understand theist opinion.)

We, along with billions of other life forms, continually live and die on Earth and it seems to have no "point". Like a storm or a fire, life is a process that continues as long as conditions allow.

Yes I think that life for repeat offenders is good.I mean cause most of these murders could have been prevented if the killers would have stayed in jail. I can relate to the victims families. My friend was killed in 1997 and they have no leads. An I know sometimes the jury lets them off but come on if the guy or girl killed more than once you know hes going to do it again.

    Meaning... relative to what?

Nothing has any meaning unless you assign it... or accept meaning from somebody else.

I would rather do my own assignment of meaning. Thank you.

Meaning is personal because meaning is relative ONLY to self. PROVE ME WRONG!

Weak people need a meaning to their life because reality's too hard for them.

Life is life without any help from anyone.

It has no meaning or purpose.

It does what it does whether you want it to or not.

There is no meaning to it at all.

When you think about it, the Christian "meaning" is pathetic. They exist to tell God how great he is. That´s it! I couldn´t think of something more pitifully vacuous if I tried.

It doesn't have to. We can find our own meanings for life.

    I make my own meaning.

It's human nature to want to feel appreciated, to be worth something. We want a meaning because we hate the idea of being useless.

One seeks meaning out of insecurity in being.

All is one; one spirit, one consciousness, one form.

    All includes infinity & eternity.

'All' is also referred to as 'reality,' 'One,' & 'God.'
