Great question. They are the same. Actually, this game of semantics became popular in the 1930's. as socialists began to call themselves liberals to mask their socialist beliefs. It is a pro big government and anti individual freedom position. When liberals began to realize that the common public which does not pay attention to politics caught on to the fact that liberals are socialists, the liberals then came up with the word progressive.
There are many who are progressive who do not even understand that the leaders of the progressive movement espouse socialism. It actually has been well hidden. That is until Obama began to appoint many of these to his cabinet and within the entire administration. Some have been asked to resign already because the public have caught on. Others, like the current Attorney General Eric Holder, has not yet resigned.

Who better than Hillary Clinton to describe the difference?
In her thesis, Hillary quoted Alinsky as explaining the difference between a liberal and a radical: "The liberal refuses to fight for the goals he professes."
I'm sure Hillary still sees herself today as a "radical." But she could never use that term and remain a viable politician. So she has adopted another term -- "progressive" -- which means the same thing to those in the know. This is the favored term of the Communist Party, too. They don't call themselves liberals, either. They call themselves "progressives." They always have. Nothing has changed.

Liberalism=opposite of progressive

Progressives don't care about civil liberties liberals do. They're generally considered the same although progressivism has very authoritarian roots and liberalism was hijacked by what most people consider socialism.

Progressive is a term that gained currency as liberal was turned into a dirty word by conservatives.
I don't really know that people preserve any meaningful difference between them in usage, but progressive does imply that someone is more pragmatic and liberal implies a little more adherence to liberal ideals, but the policies end up being the same.

A progressive ideology includes liberal views. Liberalism is a huge umbrella term while progressivism is a more strictly defined political ideology dealing with things like environmentalism and social justice issues.

Hmmm.... well neither are for individual freedom FOR EVERYBODY, and progressive ideals aren't progressive at all, so they both sort of suck!

The traditional term liberal is associated with individualism and personal liberty and freedom. Progressives believe their agenda for the modern world must be imposed on all for the greater good.

Progressives are socialists too cowardly to call themselves socialists.
