Is there a halt in ammunition production?
I was at my local pawn shop where my family has been buying ammo for our rifles, hand guns, and shot guns for years now and the shelves were almost completely empty. Luckily, I wasn't buy ammo that day. I went to WalMart and they have boxes of shells, that used to be $15 now for $50-$70. I've overheard people talking about it and they said that ammunition production is shutting down because of a bill that was passed by government. Is there any news stories on this or anywhere I can read what is going on with my firearms? I love hunting and target shooting with my family. I'm very concerned about this. Can you share with me what you know or some news stories or websites on it?
That's what I was thinking, that people blew it out of proportion. I mean, I keep shells stocked at my house and usually we have about four or five boxes for each gun so I don't have to buy them every year like some do. The last time I really bought shells was probably about three-four years ago. knew the taxes raised or was supposed to, I just didn't know if everyone was panicking over nothing or what was going on.
Thank you all for your input. All answers helped. I live in West Virginia and it's pretty much all hunters in the area I'm from. So everyone panics when they talk about ammo and guns. I tried to search it on google but didn't find it. Could be why, seeing of how it doesn't exist.

With the advent of the current Government administration, two things have happened.
1) Gun sales are through the roof, and manufacturers can't keep up.
2) Ammo sales are well past the stratosphere to feed all those guns.
Unless you live in CA or MA, where there have been some legislative changes over the past few months specifically targeting guns and ammunition restrictions, you're likely running into the "sold out" dilemma.
Manufacturers can't keep up with the demand, even though they're running at maximum capacity.
Powder manufacturers can't keep up either.
Bullet manufacturers are doing OK, but raw materials are very high (Copper especially).
What once went for $25 a box of 20 is now $75-100.
I have even learned of people bootlegging components marked up as much as 500% over retail.
If you need ammo, and can wait a few days, look at Cheaper than Dirt (dot) com, MidwayUSA.com, Cabelas.com, and other major online retailers.
There are a few exceptions, but the general rule is that ammunition is free to be shipped nationwide, and most major outlets have been getting fair supplies from the manufacturers pretty consistently.
Popular cartridges, like 30-06, .223, .308 Win, .308WinMag, 7.62x39, may be a little harder to come by, though. Deer season is on full swing in most of the nation, and most hunters have been stocking up for a long time, even now.
Until our government in office returns to something of a balance of power or a more conservative lean, expect that there will be shortages of ammunition and components, and that prices will be higher than you've ever seen before.

No, if anything they have ramped up for ALL common cartridges. No bill has been passed by Congress about ammunition for at least several years if not a few decades. I don't even know about any bills that have made it out on the floor for years.
As for prices I haven't seen anything triple or quadruple in price(for the SAME loads) but I have seen where a lot of places only have the "premium" loads on the shelf and all the plain stuff sold out. Those were already $30-40 in .30-06 when the normal price for ammunition like Remington Express, Federal Classic & Winchester w/ the Power Point bullet was about $14-18.

Misinformed,
There is an ammo bill that was signed into law for California but only effects internet ammo sales and it also doesn't take effect until February of next year. As for ammo availability, I'm guessing you haven't been watching the news this past year? The election of President Obama sent everyone into high gear buying firearms, ammo, and applying for CHLs. Ammo is starting to show up on shelves by it's a slow move. As for your wal-mart charging $50-70.00 on a box of ammo that used to run 15.00, that is price gauging and should be reported to Wal-mart home office and the Better Business Bureau.

Ammo manufacturers are dancing as fast as they can, 3 shifts a day and can't keep up with the gun salesman of the year, Obama. There's lots of hoarding going on (guilty), and abundant rumors of taxes to be imposed on ammo, limit on the amount of primers/bullets/powder you can possess, etc. Prices are crazy, and some is gouging, some is the price of red metal alloys going way up. When you see Lake City 5.56 NATO offered for 800 bucks a thousand, you know the market is nutz. Once he's voted out of office after one term and we return to a pro gun House and Senate, ammo will once again be plentiful.

I wouldn't say there's a halt in the production. Ammo prices aren't that bad down here, but they are still pretty expensive.
Just like everything else we can buy, the prices and the availability of ammo depends on supply and demand. Right now, the demand is greater than the supply, so that will drive prices up.

good day Im an Australian and weapons have been banned right here because 1996. Gun crime is at an all time extreme. So those criminals for sure do no longer care with regard to the regulation. Criminals are creative human beings and tend to locate loop holes while ever they could. What you may do is arise with a extra acceptable screening application for arming licenses and improve the protection at susceptible places. Banning weapons would not paintings.

Ammunition production has slowed on certain calibers that have become less demanding. Other than that, the shortage issue is related to everybody buying ever box they can get their hands on leaving the rest of us to not be able to buy any. Most people are buying it by the case now and not the box.

The price at Walmart hasn't changed in the two weeks since I've been there. They told me it was selling out as fast as it came in. Had what I needed.

Ammunition production has not been shut down, if anything they have sped it up to try and meet demands. No bill was passed by congress concerning ammunition.
