Dog attacks and the media?
I read this post on a well known news site regarding yesterdays dog attack and want to know what you guys think?
"....this was a savage attack on a defenceless child by a savage dog that needed a bullet....It's sad pathetic animal lovers like yourself who restrict my rights of bringing my children up in a dogless society.... I dont want dogs around me or my children...if you love animals go and live on the serengeti."
This was in response to a comment that the media should not hype this out of proportion and that some dog owners are not representative of all dog owners.
What do you think? I am not condoning what happened nor am I defending the irresponsible (was thinking of a much worse description) owners who let this happen. But, I worry as a dog owner that media coverage and narrow minded opinions may prompt irrational action against all dog owners. Or is drastic action the way forward?

Utterly tragic that a four year old child died, but with regard to the media it's important to keep a sense of proportion.
Dog bite incidents which result in a fatality is an extremely rare occurrence, even if the media would paint it otherwise with their sensationalist reporting & misleading use of statistics.
Would the mother want to live on a people free island apart from her family, because that is the ONLY way to ensure her children could never encounter a pedophile, murderer, mugger, rapist, drunk driver....all of which are crimes committed by humans.
What I would like is for the court to place more importance on the actions of the owner or person who was in control of the dog & for that person to receive a significant custodial sentence if death or serious bodily injury resulted from their lack of control of the dog.
Banning breeds is a pointless waste of time because all it does is drive the breeding of illegal breeds underground, which means that poorly bred dog are available for a price....

Drastic action IS the way forward...but not BSL.
1) First and foremost stop all BYB And I mean the little designer dogs as well.
2) Hold owners accountable for their animals, all animals.
and
3) Hold parents accountable for their children.
I will always say, Ban the DEED not the BREED.
The person that wrote that statement is crazy and has some terrible phobias. She or He needs psychiatric help.
What I wrote is not by any means all that should be done, but it is a start. When these dogs that attack are handled, the owners should be handled as well.
I am feeling bad today and do not feel like preaching so I will leave it there.

I do admit I get bothered when I hear it. I wouldn't get bothered if I heard the SAME amount of stories of good dogs. And not just a dog doing something heroic or incredible, just a regular dog. NO dog attacks for no reason, so dang it if you're gonna report on a story of a dog attacking 'cuz he's a dangerous breed' or 'it was at random, and no reason was given for the attack', report of random dogs doing NOTHING too >: (

I think it's absolutley ridiculous, but I get used to it being a 'Dangerous Dog' owner.
If he doesn't want to live in a dog friendly society he should live on the serengeti cos it's him with the problem.
No specific breed is dangerous unless in the wrong hands as has happened with the most recent dog attack.

Thats awful.. mostly because people are causing these incidents by mistreating/breeding dogs and of course people like that who obviously don't know anything about dogs and their true nature.
I doubt we will ever have a "dogless society" dogs were bred to live and work along side humans! Thats the whole reason they were domesticated! It's funny seeing that because I've had so many people judge me for having a dog and a young child, saying that its dangerous and irresponsible.. that may be one of the most ignorant comments I've ever seen

I would have liked to raise MY children in an idiotless society.
I dont like idiots around me, at all.
But I would have to go live on the Serengeti to avoid them. :o)
I still have to deal with idiots every day because it isnt my world, and I dont make the rules.....fortunately, people like this do not, either.

That answer by this person is ridiculous - that would be like saying ALL people should go live in the Serengeti, not just the few criminals. Hello! People amaze me sometimes...

That reponse was ignorant and completely idiotic. He/she should be culled from the gene pool. I feel just awful for the family, but this kind of comment was uncalled for.

I don't know the full story but if the dog attacked a child he should be put down. But to say what this person said I don't think it is rational.
