Can College Students Adopt A Child?

I was wondering if it is possible for students enrolled in a University to adopt? I know that financial needs would be met and that stability would also be a consideration, but will adoption agencies even consider college students?

I have to start off by saying THANK YOU for wanting to adopt a child.

I hate to say it but the sad thing is it's so hard to adopt a child i don't know what they make it so hard but it is. if this child is related to you then you have a good chance. however, there is nothing stopping you from trying to adopt. they will look into things like how much time you spend at home and how much money you make and so on. like i said if the child is related the some of these things can be over looked. I wish you the best of luck and remember the moms and or dads that adopt turn out to be the best parents in the world,

It depends on your age, and your general life situation.

If you're in the 18-21 traditional age range, it's unlikely. Most agencies require prospective adoptive parents to be at least 21-25, and state law almost invariably sets at least 21 as their age requirement. Legally, you wouldn't meet that if you were in the younger ranges of college age, and it wouldn't matter what the agency would accept because the state wouldn't permit it.

If you're going back as an older student, pursuing your education wouldn't necessarily prevent you from adopting. You would need to be financially secure enough to provide for the child, and you or your spouse would need to be able to be home enough to look after the child. Adopted children, even infants, need time to bond and attach, and so can't be shuffled off to daycare. If you're a full-time student, you would need to figure out how to manage your time to meet your child's needs.

All this to say, it depends more on your age and situation than the fact that you're in college. People go to university at all ages and in all sorts of circumstances, so that alone is unlikely to be the deciding factor.

most likely they would not want a college student to adopt. Simply because its important for the student to focus primarily on school

Anyone over the age of 18 years old can be considered for adoption. I know, because I have asked a social worker. However, it does vary from state to state. If you can prove the financial needs would be met, and that you would be able to be fit parents, then they would defiantly consider you.

Possibly. It depends. Are you married? How old are you? If you're just some 20-year-old then no, and you shouldn't be considering becoming a mom in the first place. But if you're older and are just in school part time or something, then you have a chance.

Doubtful; You would need to meet the same criteria as any other couple or single adult.

Not in a million years; you would not have enough time or money to be a fit mother.
