Are Warmers old enough to remember this pending disaster?

The Cooling World

Newsweek, April 28, 1975

There are ominous signs that the Earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production – with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth. The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now. The regions destined to feel its impact are the great wheat-producing lands of Canada and the U.S.S.R. in the North, along with a number of marginally self-sufficient tropical areas – parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indochina and Indonesia – where the growing season is dependent upon the rains brought by the monsoon.

The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it. In England, farmers have seen their growing season decline by about two weeks since 1950, with a resultant overall loss in grain production estimated at up to 100,000 tons annually. During the same time, the average temperature around the equator has risen by a fraction of a degree – a fraction that in some areas can mean drought and desolation. Last April, in the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded, 148 twisters killed more than 300 people and caused half a billion dollars’ worth of damage in 13 U.S. states.

.....Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve. But the scientists see few signs that government leaders anywhere are even prepared to take the simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become GRIM REALITY.

I don't know what your question has to do with age and memory, but I am having a tough time trying to go along with either argument. We have been having hotter, and longer summers, but for some reason this summer while very hot in the months of June, July and August, did not really start until it was supposed to. Now in the past, May and sometime April starts going into the 90's, and we don't come out of the heat until October, but not this year. I live in New Jersey, and have the ability to enjoy all four seasons, rather than just one. So, was it a passing faze, is the heat going back to normal now? Was it in fact that we had El Ninyo and El Nina, or however they are spelled, passing through our world at the time that we noticed all the shift in the weather. These are Mexican names and I'm assuming that they follow a Mexican climate, which is hot at best. I'm no expert, and don't intend to become one just to answer this question, I'm giving you an answer based on common sense of a person living the seasons and what I, myself am seeing. I don't want anyone to ignore Climate warming, and find ourselves without a means to grow food, live on land, or lose land to water, but how do we stop it? I see the ozone layer getting smaller, I know this is dangerous, but is this something that is due to pollution, more so than nature changing? Pollution is a major factor in the air quality, and the ozone becoming smaller over the years. What am I going to do to stop the pollution, I can't stop nature, but I'm sure People can reduce the pollution, as that's a man made problem.

i guess some here didn't even bother checking the embedded link showing this "phenom" has been going on since before 1895....i guess they didn't bother to read the "headlines" from our ole gray lady newspaper documenting all the "scares" we have gone thru for over 120 years. i guess they didn't bother to read the headlines.....As the Times put it on Feb. 24, 1895, “Geologists Think the World May Be Frozen Up Again.”, The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, amidst hysteria about the dangers of a new ice age. The media had been spreading warnings of a cooling period since the 1950s, but those alarms grew louder in the 1970s.

Three months before, on January 11, The Washington Post told readers to “get a good grip on your long johns, cold weather haters – the worst may be yet to come,”, The nation entered the “longest warm spell since 1776,” according to a March 27, 1933, New York Times headline., Out of 21 winters examined from 1912-33 in Washington, D.C., 18 were warmer than normal and all of the past 13 were mild., On Feb. 24, 1895, the Times announced “Geologists Think the World May Be Frozen Up Again.” , In the 1970s, as the world cooled down, the fear was that mankind couldn’t grow enough food with a longer winter. “Climate Changes Endanger World’s Food Output,” declared a New York Times headline on Aug. 8, 1974, right in the heat of summer., Various climatologists issued a statement that “the facts of the present climate change are such that the most optimistic experts would assign near certainty to major crop failure in a decade,” reported the Dec. 29, 1974, New York Times. If policy makers did not account for this oncoming doom, “mass deaths by starvation and probably in anarchy and violence” would result.

anyway, this stupidity has been going on for generations now and i find it hugely amusing that the church of "climate change" can still seem to find willing participants. but we have government schools to blame for this and a very apathetic citizentry.

great question and links....it's good to see there are people out here with intelligence and critical thinking.....especially when items like this can only cause extreme embarrassement for the clueless sheep.

I was in college that year. Your article says they had measured a fractional increase in temperature at the equator. What I remember floating around school was the dire prediction that the ice caps were going to grow. We were heading for another ice age and of course, it was all man made.

I was a dope smokin' radical hippie type busy drinking Carter koolaid that summer and supporting efforts to curb man's wreckless disregard for our planet. Viet Nam was over, so we turned our attention to the evil corporations that were going to cause us all to freeze to death. Boy was I a dumb-azz then!

I'm not quite so gullible today.

I'm not an expert, but if being proactive about climate, biodiversity, etc.. our environment is wrong, than I don't want to be right. You guys talk about leaving your kids future debts (which guys look away when tax and spend by republicans for war and imperialism), yet you complain about leaving your kids a healthy place to live. Money isn't everything, I know you mammon think it is, but it isn't. Money is no good if the environment is destroyed, where will you live.

Save an endanger species, you guys complain.

    Cleaner water, you guys complain.

Cleaner air , you guys complain.

but spend billions blowing things up, and building the next super weapon. And you guys get all happy. Because blowing thing up (terrorist), is the highlight of your life.

I wonder if most your homes are dirty.

Thanks for sharing that article. Kind of makes the global warmers (formerly known as "the coolers") look nutty with those dire predictions. What are they the environmental equivalent of fundies? I'm suspicious of all the money changing hands on this & the way it will be used to bring in global governance. Gosh, no wonder Rockefeller hates the internet. Too bad Gore created it.

Their side didn't have the clout to take advantage of it then by raising taxes. Then before they could take advantage, the weather changed ! Just as it's been doing since 1998 - when temps peaked. They're in a rush to pass laws and ratify treaties now before the same happens again.

I never hear that one ---

But ---- the building code requires foundations to be 4 feet under the ground along with water pipes

The frost hasn't reached down more than 2 feet in 5 yrs going down occasionally to 3 feet in the last decade --- In the most recent years it has rarely reached below 6 inches

It is Dec the grass is green outside for the 3rd or 4th year running --- temps have been breaking records

The Arctic is now an open sea passage for most of the year and ice build ups are below average - There will be less ice next year again after the run offs of Spring this year because of the lack of build

Migratory birds are not migrating in the numbers they used to and seasonal plants bloom in months they never did before

---- I won't tell you how or why these things are happening --- but together with the freak storms the odd weather and more Dr David Suzuki predictions are becoming a nightly reality on the TV visible from the window

To believe Global cooling I have to deny my 5 senses

To believe global warming all I have to do is go outside and look at the green grass and the soft earth while wearing a light jacket in Canada in December

2 years ago I was walking the dog by the beach on Jan 1st in a tee shirt ---

Yes, I am.. And unlike the simpleton who suggested it, I never was a drug user. The article says that the earth's temperature had increased, so calling it the cooling world is misleading. Weather pattern changes can result in an ice age. That is what the article is implying. Just because their predictions didn't come true as quickly as the once thought does not mean that global warming does not exist. And we quite a bit has been done since the 70's to stop it.
