Mastiff pros and cons?

It's hard to give pros and cons about dog breeds because what I might consider a pro, you might consider a con. But, here's what I would personally consider to be the pros and cons..

PROS:

- Size. They're sturdy, not fragile. With the exception of when they're very little puppies, they can't really get underfoot.

- Size -- for intimidation factor. I don't recommend getting any dog solely to scare people off, but their sheer size (and the size of their bark) are a very good deterrent for anyone thinking of breaking in.

- Low energy. They need their exercise, and young Mastiffs certainly love to play, but they're generally couch potatoes. Nice and lazy.

- Clingy. They aren't usually independent. They're serious family dogs who need to be in the home with you. They're often called Velcro dogs because they stick to you like Velcro.

- Loving and affectionate.

- Very perceptive. They can usually weed out shady individuals with ease and differentiate between them and all the good people.

- Usually friendly and happy toward people who are friendly and harmless.

- Patient, gentle and tolerant, including toward kids.

- Generally fine with other dogs and other animals.

- Guardian instincts.

CONS:

- Prone to lots of health problems, especially if you obtain from a lousy breeder (duh).

- Prone to timidity and/or aggression if you obtain from a lousy breeder and/or they suffer a traumatic experience. (Same goes with all breeds, really.)

- Cost. Purchasing from a quality breeder is generally $1200 to $2500, and then it costs a *lot* to care for them.. Quality food -- how much they eat -- costs a lot.

- Can be slow to train, if only because they often move slowly, at the "Mastiff tempo." (Positive training usually works perfectly well, though.)
