Anti English Spectrum issues in Korea?

I was wondering what level of concern foreigners living in Korea are giving the AES in South Korea. I know that of late they have been ramping up their anti- foreigner propaganda, and I know that a separate group has made death threats against foreign teachers. How concerned are you? what measures do you feel should be taken by the government or by companies bringing foreigners over to Korea, if any?

Really?? I'm korean and this is the first time i heard things like this....

Well koreans are really supportive with shareing its culture with foreigners.. and 2010 is supose to be the year where tourism will the highest level, so they are doing everything they can to welcome the foreigners...

You dont have to worry, also dont get it the wrong way, but i think u are kind of overreacting... in America we got a lot of racism going on, and many die due to the color of thier skin and we dont see our government today doing anything.... and ur worrying about some minority of koreans going on rampage cuz they feel that the foreigners are taking their jobs? come on~~ relax :]

The small percentage of Koreans are acting like this because of these things:

    1. Korea is going through a period where people are losing jobs, and they see these foreigners taking thier jobs just because they are from other countries... I mean come on, how would u feel if u lost your job to someone who wasnt even born in America...

    2. Most Koreans feel that many foreigners come to Korea, Japan, China to sleep with thier woman and play around with girls... which is false, but they believe that and some foreigners do come to korea for that reason :[

    3. Also the way Jobs hire people are really blind... For example, If I graducated from UCLA with degree in culture history, but i go to korea applying for highschool math. Because of the fact i graduated from UCLA, they believe that i am smart.... And they believe that all Foreigners are smart because, they think all foreign college or univercity are elite and legit..... So that is another reason why such thing as AES exist

    4. Also Koreans have the one of the biggest pride in thier nation... If u insult the korean culture infront of them, they will jump u.... and koreans see these foreigners, who cant even speak korean and have no pride in korea, taking thier place in korea just really makes them to hate them..

BUT dont sweat about it!!! remember ONLY THE SMALL MINORITY AMOUNT of people have these grudge.. but dont let it bother you.. and MAny koreans are really friendly and they are pro-Foreigners

Hope i helped and didnt offend you :]]

There are many xenophobic organizations in Korea

One such organization was known as the “Anti-English Spectrum” (AES), a group based in Korea with around 17,000 members who spread racist information in public locations like subway stations as well as online.

According to the Anti-English Spectrum Web site, some of the online examples of racist propaganda included phrases like “90 percent of white men in Korea are villainous human garbage.”

Other examples targeted Korean women, calling them “White Man Groupies” and claiming that any Korean woman engaged in a relationship with a white man was “betraying Korea.”

The majority of the Anti-English Spectrum is composed of Korean men and most of the hate towards foreigners was due to the fear of “white men taking their women.”

AES claims that foreigners are targeting Korean children in order to sexually molest them.

AES spreads rumors of foreigners who infect Koreans with AIDS.

AES conducts vigilante activities such as the tracking of any persons

AES posts racially derogatory images and messages

    AES also targets interracial couples

Since its inception, the group has increasingly pursued the deportation of "illegal and problem teachers." As for who should be deported exactly, it looks for fake degree holders, drug users and HIV/AIDS-infected individuals. If those don't work, expats could be accused of "violating the Korean moral code."

I think you will be safe if you live in a good neighborhood in Seoul and teach English in safe places like Apgujeong.

You can not rely on the government to do anything about it. You only need to avoid places which are not safe.
