Can we be specific? "A soldier" is a broad category, and what am I thanking the soldier for?
I would certainly have no problem thanking a WWII vet for what they did. In that case, we fought a war that made sense. It was brutal, but absolutely necessary to save the world as we know it.
But if we're talking about the bogus wars of King George W, or Vietnam... why would I thank a soldier for fighting wars that were none of our business, for invading sovereign countries and destroying lives and infrastructure? What kills me is that some of them are stupid enough to believe that the war in Iraq was somehow related to "preserving our freedoms." That's just ignorance, and if a soldier is ignorant enough to buy it, I owe him not thanks but pity.
I also have compassion for those who were drafted and sent to Vietnam against their will.

I'm not sure I'd thank them, to be honest. I might thank a couple, who honestly thought they were doing something good and right, but not the psychos who wanted to do some killin'.
