Best way to transport fish?
I have a calico ryukin goldfish (named Aesop) in my apartment at school, but since I'm going home for 2 and a half weeks for Christmas, I'm bringing him home. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get him home. Aesop is about 8 cm / 3 inches (including his tail. Actual body is only about half of that). It's about an hour drive home.
My dad is coming to pick me up, and he thinks I should just pour out some of the water and hold the aquarium on my lap (measurements are below. It's 5 gallons), but my mom thinks I should put Aesop in a bag to take him home, and just pack the aquarium to put him in once we get home.
Which is the best way, or is there a different way I should do it? I just want the least traumatizing way to transport him, because I love Aesop :)
Tank measurements:
Length: 40 cm / 16 in
Width: 19.5 cm / 8ish in
Height: 25.5 cm / 10 in

Bag him it will be less stressful , he won't be splashed all around the tank. But also try to keep as much of his tank watter as you can because if you'll set up tank a new you can have ammonia spike and it will harm your Aesop.

Put Aesop himself in a Ziploc baggie with 1/3 full of tank water and the other 2/3 full of air (if there isn't enough air in that bag to dissolve in the water and last an hour, Aesop can suffocate.) Make sure that it is a large bag, so there is enough water for him to be comfortable. Then put that bag in an all styrofoam box with lid. The styrofoam will keep the temperature in the water pretty stable, and this will keep your fish from going into shock. It is also opaque, so he won't get scared seeing all the changes around him.
Like someone else mentioned, don't feed him the day before, so that he won't soil the transportation water.
Empty out at least 1/2 of the water in the aquarium, so it won't be sloshing around, but keep enough in that the gravel stays submerged. Also, make sure that the filter is submerged too, either by lowering it in the tank or putting it in its own baggy of tank water, making sure that the actual plug doesn't get wet. You may have the filter part in the water, and the cord coming out, and just hold this in your hand so it won't spill. This way you won't lose any of the beneficial bacteria.
You may also want to save as much of the tank water as possible by putting it in containers. You'll want to add in the new water from the place you are going to gradually over a few days if it is far away, so that Aesop will be able to adjust to it slowly.
And, of course, once you get there make sure that you float Aesop in the tank so he becomes used to the temperature again before letting him out.

steps in transporting fish:
* dont feed the fish the day or a day before when you are going. this will prevent them from getting stressed.
*get a big transparent bag that will accomodate your fish. do not put in any accesorries inside the bag.
*buy a portable pump and put the aerating tube inside the bag (make sure it is below water line). tie a rubber band to hold the tube and bag in place. be sure that the bag wont leak.
*place bag in one of the tough big plastic containers to provide less water movement and a precaution if the plastic bag sprung a leak.
then your all set. hope this works for you

When we moved with my fish, I kept about a quarter of their tank water, and put them in bags to transport so they wouldn't be splashed around as much. Then at the new place set up the tank and put them back in and they were fine :)

when I transport a fish this time of year, I put the fish in a bag, and hold him under my coat to keep him warm. I dump as much as I can out of the tank, and make sure it doesn't break
