Well Istanbul is, by no means, cheap for an American but not pricey as well if u know from where to buy ur stuff. Bargaining in Bazaar is possible. Offer the half of whatever price they offer u first and then meet somewhere in the middle. Also u may start asking for something else that u are actually not planning to buy and then later on u can divert ur interest the thing u want to buy where u'd imply to the seller that ure actually never planning to buy it but just want to learn its price so that maybe u'll buy along with the first commodity u were interested in. This may get the price lower. But be careful these tactics are only available in the Old Bazaar. U cant apply this in normal franchised stores around the city.
How much a day normally costs depends on where u eat and what means of transport u re gonna use. If u eat in McDonalds or Burger King, u can get away with 10 liras per person for a meal. (actually in Burger King right now theres a special discount where u spend 8something liras and get 2 meals for 2 persons) If u want to taste the Turkish cuisine u'll have to, obviously, pay more than 10 liras per person. I'd say maximum u'll spend a day wont be more than 100 liras excluding the hotel. (That is, if u dont go to clubs around Bebek. Instead go to the clubs around Asmalımescit Beyoğlu area, tho be warned, a beer is not cheaper than 7 liras in Asmalımescit as well)Nightlife is fabulous in Istanbul tho dont expect much in weekdays. On Friday and Saturday nights around Asmalımescit u wont be even able to find enough place to take ur step (i litterally mean it) I actually have a place in Asmalımescit area and i have to stand the noise till 4- 4.30 AM in the morning. Classy neighbourhood tho.
Have a fun holiday.

Number one rule of shopping in Turkey : Bargain in shops unless they are big retailers.
Now as to your question; depends what you would call normal day. You can have a doner kebab and ayran which would cost you around 6-7TL or you could enjoy fish and raki or wine in a nice restaurant with gourgeous view for around 50-75TL per head. Public transportation is very cheap but if you would like to take a taxi they are charging almost 2TL per km and an opening of 1 km.
But if your coming from Europe it will seem cheaper due to the fact of Euro being very valuable.

All I know is... I can get a massive party sized packet of Cheetos for 1YTL in Turkey, I couldn't get enough of them, not at that price. In the U.K that will cost you £3 for a packet that size. In Turkey it costs 50p. Go figure. Cheap enough for you?

Being outside of the Euro Zone, Turkey remains one of the best value destinations to visit. You can get by on as little or as much as you can afford.
