How long have you been diabetic and what type?

So I've been diabetic for 30 years, type 1. I have been very fortunate to not have any serious side effects and hope to keep it that way. How long have you been diabetic, what type, and how well do you take care of yourself?

Update:

Congratulations and keep up the great work. It's good to hear that you are taking care of yourselves. You both deserve the Best Answer, but can only pick one, so both of you give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!

I've had Type 2 Diabetes for over 4.. months now. I'm a newbie.

I have read every piece of material available. I found http://www.diabetesforums.com/ the day I was diagnosed, and I hopped on a low-carb diet. I brought my fasting levels down to 100ish from 320 in about 7 days, and since then, I hover around 80-90 fasting, and try to keep it under 120 at all times.

I guess i'm still in that gung ho phase right now.. I hope it continues to be this easy to manage. I'm on 500mg Metformin once a day, but I'm going to talk to my doctor about stopping that at my next appointment. I'd rather simply just be diet and exercise controlled.

I've only lost about 30 lbs so far (a ways to go -- 6'2", 255 now), but I'm hitting the gym in the mornings and staying on a lower carb diet.

So, still a relative newbie, but I feel like I'm doing well so far.

I have had Type 2 Diabetes for over 10 years now, and it has had it's ups and downs, but I am on Januvia, which is by far the best treatment I have ever taken. No weight gain, no side effects, and I really try to watch my carb count and keep my cholesterol down; which I take Lipitor for that. My A1c's have been very good since I switched to Januvia;and I am walking and feeling better now.
