There are different ways to classify different kinds of mutations, but here are a few:

    1. Base substitution mutations--Changing 1 base into another

    2. Insertion mutations--Adding 1 or more bases into a gene.

    3. Deletion mutation--removing one or more bases from a gene.

    4. Gene rearrangements--larger scale changes that move a gene from one place on a chromosome to another. There are several different kinds of these like translocations and inversions.

    Hope this helps....

There are two types of such mutation:-

    (1) Point mutation and (2) Frame-shift mutation.

From the point of view of actions and mechanisms they are subdivided as follows:-

    (1) Point mutation:- (a) Transition (where a purine/pyrimidine replaced by another) and (b) Transversion (where a purine isreplaced by a pyrimidine and vice-versa).

    (2) Frame-shift mutation:- (a) Insertion (where a base or base-pair is inserted into the DNA) and (b) Deletion (where a base or base-pair is deleted and no insertion occurs).

    Thus collectively the types are-

    (i) Transition.

    (ii) Transversion.

    (iii) Insertion.

    (iv) Deletion.
