what is the penalty for falsifying a police report in CA?
i have an 19 year old friend who made a false report on a stolen car when she actually crashed it. a few hours later investigators came and he admitted to lying and told the cops that she crashed the car and left it there. she told them that she was just scared of her parents finding out that she crashed the car. there was no one else involved in the car crash but her. do u think she will face any penalty? what are the chances of the district attorney letting everything go? and how long does it take until she finds out whether the false police report will be taken further?

The chances of the prosecutor letting "everything go" are almost next to zero.
In the best case scenario she'll get probation and a fine, also she could be even be forced to pay back to the city for the time they wasted on her.

She could be charged with wasting police time or knowingly falsifying documentation in order to dupe insurance but if it's her first offence then they usually let you away with a warning,at the worst a fine and penalty points on her licence.
